Company description
The Scubaneers are a teaching club based at the B.R. Ryall YMCA in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. The club is a member of the Illinois Council of Skin and Scuba Diving and conducts 3 ten week open water one scuba training sessions per year. If you are looking for great 1 on 1 training or a group of people to dive with, we are for you. The club sponsors a variety of Summer cold water diving opportunities along with a Fall and Spring warm water trip to tropical locals. You do not need to be a member to dive with us.
The Scubaneers Dive Club of the B. R. Ryall YMCA Glen Ellyn, Illinois has been teaching scuba and certifying divers since the Y was opened in the 1960`s. We try very hard to make our courses fun and enjoyable, while stressing safety and teaching the necessary skills. Our course is taught to the strict standards of the national YMCA scuba program. The first SCUBA instructors were YMCA instructors, and certified in Chicago, Ill. in 1959. They provided the dedication and knowledge that has become our tradition. The YMCA has trained divers throughout the world and helped to form other dive training organizations. Throughout our history we have worked tirelessly to improve diver safety and enjoyment with a parallel sense of responsibility toward the underwater world which we explore.
WHEN THE COURSE MEETS:
Our course is 10 weeks long. It meets on 10 consecutive Friday nights, beginning at 7 pm in the classroom, followed immediately at 8:30 pm in the pool. The pool session runs until 10:00 pm. We conduct 3 classes per year, which begin in early September, early January and mid March.
Upon successful completion of the classroom and pool portions of the course the student diver is eligible to complete the open water check out dives. Following these dives, the student is fully certified as an Open Water Diver. For local check out dives, the YMCA provides all the necessary equipment, with the exception of a wet suit, which can be rented for a nominal fee from a local dive shop.
CERTIFICATION:
After successfully completing the check out dives, the student becomes certified as a YMCA Open Water Diver. This certification is recognized at dive locations all over the world. You will receive a certification card that identifies you as a YMCA diver, allows you to rent SCUBA equipment, participate in advanced training and explore exotic diving destinations.
STAFF QUALIFICATIONS:
Our scuba staff has been professionally trained in scuba instruction and scuba lifesaving. We pride ourselves on our professionalism and teacher to student ratios, with pool ratios of 2 students for each teacher being very common. Most of our staff has at least 10 years of teaching experience, with some having over 20 years of experience. This results in a high quality program, which can be tailored to different ability levels and different learning speeds.
COSTS:
The cost of the course is $210 for YMCA members and $240 for non YMCA members. This includes all text books, a set of dive tables and all the snorkel and SCUBA equipment necessary to complete the course. If the student decides to “check out†with us there are some additional fees. The additional costs are a $30 certification filing fee and check out dive expenses, such as travel costs to Kankakee, SCUBA park admission fees, and wet suit rental. Although not required, we recommend that by the third week of the class, the students purchase their own mask, fins and snorkel. The cost of these items can total between $100 and $200, depending on the quality and features of the items selected.
We periodically offer Advanced Open Water Diver, Scuba Lifesaving and Accident Management and Dive Refresher Courses. We are offer courses in Snorkeling and Reef Ecology. We also offer courses in First Aid and DAN Oxygen Provider. Other Chicagoland YMCA`s also offer advanced courses.
