Company description
John Norris` Aqua Specialists has been providing everything for sport and professional SCUBA diving to the Great Lakes region and beyond for over 30 years.
We provide the knowledge and individual attention needed to safely teach SCUBA diving to anyone. We offer courses for the beginner to the advanced diver, including open water, advanced, specialty, nitrox, etc.
Aqua Specialists is both a PADI Sanctioned Dive Center and NAUI Professional Facility and is the only dive shop in Ohio to earn both. Together, PADI and NAUI issue at least 75% of all scuba diving certification cards in the United States. We have been teaching recreational scuba diving in the Cleveland area since 1968. Our staff of professional instructors have a wide and varied background in sport, research, technical and commercial diving, and hyperbaric medicine. Their diving experience extends from Lake Erie to the Caribbean and Canada to the South Pacific. John Norris is a part-time faculty member teaching scuba diving at Baldwin-Wallace College, Case-Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University, and John Carroll University. He has also been employed by NASA to teach diving to the designers of the Freedom Space Station. Bill Masler and Alan Ameida assist with teaching scuba diving classes at community programs in Cleveland Heights, Mayfield Village, Rocky River and Shaker Heights.
Included in your course is the following:
• 6 to 10 Lecture Sessions with Instructor (minimum of 12 hours);
• 6 to 10 Pool Sessions with one Instructor for every five students (minimum of 16 hrs);
• Use of scuba tanks with air, regulator w/gauges and dive computer, buoyancy compensator jacket, weight belt and weights, & wet suits for all pool sessions;
• PADI and/or NAUI referral letter is available for open water dives elsewhere;
• Instruction, classroom, and pool fees;
• Large three-ring notebook with over 100 pages of supplemental material.
You are invited to stop in and visit us to find out more about diving. You may sign-up for a one-session Discover Scuba lesson to sample the sport, or sit-in and observe one classroom and pool session.
Explore the exciting underwater world of Northern Ohio`s quarries and Lake Erie or join us on one of our escorted trips to the Bahamas while earning your PADI Advanced Open Water and/or NAUI Advanced Scuba certification. Let us help you to become a safer, more comfortable and confident diver. A whole new world of diving enjoyment awaits you. You can do it in as little as two days!
You`ll do five dives for PADI (six for NAUI) including underwater navigation, night and deep dives. Options for the remaining dives include multilevel (computer), boat, wreck, buoyancy control, search and recovery, drift, dry suit, underwater naturalist, underwater photographer and underwater propulsion vehicle.
Underwater navigation, search and recovery, buoyancy control, dry suit, underwater propulsion vehicle and underwater photographer dives can be accomplished at the local quarry. All five or six dives can be done in one weekend at the Western Ohio Quarries or on a long weekend trip to the Bahamas.
In this class you will learn how to use oxygen-enriched air (EAN) to safely extend your bottom times at recreational dive limits, or add a safety factor to your dives and feel better after your dives. We will provide training and education in the safe use of nitrogen-oxygen mixtures. In addition to the advantages and limits of using Nitrox, topics included are the physics and physiology of Nitrox use, oxygen safety, and the analysis of Nitrox mixtures. Certification is issued through IANTD (International Association of Nitrox and Technical Divers), TDI (Technical Diving International), PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) and/or NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors).
Location description:
Our new store is located in the Warren Village Shopping Center at the corner of Warren Road and Edgecliff Ave, on the west side, across from Giant Eagle.
Your entire day of diving will take place at either GILBOA QUARRY, PORTAGE QUARRY, or WHITE STAR QUARRY. Directions to the quarries are available. The driving times are approximate and are calculated from Aqua Specialists.
Gilboa Quarry is in Findlay, Ohio off of Route 224. Just look for the cement cow. The Gilboa facility prides itself on being dedicated to diving, climbing and rapelling.
All of the sites are indicated on the map, but there are also a wide variety of fish including: rainbow trout; large, small, and rock bass; bluegill; grass carp; walleye; pearch; coy; and the elusive paddlefish.
Also, the quarry has two designated areas; a shallow side and a deep area (which is any location north of the underwater wall.) To dive on the deep side, all divers must file a deep dive plan regardless of depth. This is strictly enforced!
Absolutely no swimming or fishing!
Portage Quarry Recreation Club, Inc. is a 42 acre Recreation Park located south of the college town of Bowling Green, Ohio. The spring fed 22 acre lake offers some of the clearest and cleanest water in the midwest. This offers an ideal place for scuba diving, snorkeling, swimming, windsurfing, and fishing. Also, shaded picnic areas, large grassy lawns, three volleyball and horseshoe courts, a sandy beach, and free parking are available.
Divers must show proof of certification or be with a certified instructor, must have a BC and depth gauge, no spear fishing, no diving without dive buddy, no personal compressors or cascade systems are allowed.
Scuba divers have taken advantage of the clear water for quite some time. You have easy access to the water`s edge with parking nearby. Underwater attractions include a sunken school bus, three cabin cruisers, a phone booth, silo, many cars and a four seat Beechcraft airplane. Friendly Blue-gills, bass, walleyes, and catfish abound. The onsite dive shop has two 18cfm compressors and a large cascade system for fast certified air fills.
For the non-divers a large swimming area and three rafts offer sun in the summer sun. Also, a roped-off shallow area with a slide is available for children. The primitive camping has 23 sites with a vending machine, ice, port-a-pots, and changing rooms. Food, groceries, and motels are available just a few miles away in Bowling Green.
White Star Quarry includes 15 acres of water and is located 1/2 mile south of Gibsonburg on State Route 300. White Star Park includes a beach with swimming area, playground, freshwater well, small boat launch, several fishing platforms, and of course easy accesibility for the diver. Only a few picnic tables separate the water from the diver parking lot. Air fills and equipment rental are available onsite. There is also a snack bar and changing rooms.
