Company description
Established in 1984, Big Island Divers is a Full Service PADI 5 STAR Dive Store. Having completed an expansion and renovation in the summer of 2002, we now offer residents and guests alike, a dive shop like no other on the Big Island.
Big Island Divers provides the opportunity to enjoy a custom built United States Coast Guard inspected dive boat for intimate reef encounters. Serving the needs of eight or less divers per excursion, means our Captain and Divemaster can provide a personal level of service that can turn a good day of diving into the most outstanding feature of your vacation. The responsibility of our entire staff is to provide you with a truly enjoyable diving experience that you will always treasure. A high regard for safety blended with years of experience accomplishes this.
If you are not a certified diver but scuba diving is something that you have always wanted to try, we offer PADI`s ``Discover Scuba Diving`` program to let you do just that. If you want to get deeper into diving, we have certification programs in private, semi-private and classroom settings. Advanced diving instruction, specialties, rescue diver, medic first aid, and Divemaster programs are also available.
Want to catch some ``RAYS``? Join us for our sunset/manta dive! Catch the ``Rays at Night``! Capture the experience on video and live the dive over and over again.
Many divers who have not had the opportunity to dive the Kona coast before wonder what to expect. Our visibility quite often exceeds 100 feet. It can however drop as low as 40 or 50 feet on the very rare occasions when we have high surf, but can also push the 150 foot mark on others when we call it `` Lake Kona ``.
With Big Island Divers, you are not restricted in any way as to the type of diving you wish to do. With a maximum of 8 passengers on each charter, we are able to accommodate everyone. You can plan your own custom excursion, and normally we can work with your plan, or you have the option of a totally private charter with up to 8 members of your family or friends. Certified divers need not be worried about being held back because of ``Discover Scuba Diving`` participants, as they always have their own Instructor on board, and do not share a Divemaster with you. Our Instructors and Divemasters are all certified by PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors), and our Captains are all licensed by the United States Coast Guard.
Our newly expanded dive shop offers a full range of equipment sales and rentals as well as on-site service. Our boat offers comfortable and dependable transportation to over 50 GPS charted sites.
What to Expect:
* Visibility exceeding 100 feet
* Water temperatures 75-85 F range
* Plenty of tropical fish varieties
* Opportunities to see larger marine animals
* Photographic opportunities
* Plan your own custom excursions
* Private charters available
* Friendly and helpful staff
* Lunch and snacks served with all morning 2 and 3 tank dives
* PADI Instructors and Dive Masters for your safety and instructional needs
* Full equipment rentals and servicing available on site
* Short boat rides to over fifty GPS charted sites
* Something new on every dive
In the showroom you will find all the most recent equipment from the top manufacturers in the field. Our shop personnel have attended workshops and equipment seminars provided by each of our distributors so they know the equipment intimately.
If shore diving is your desire, we have a full line of rental equipment for you to choose from. All of our rental equipment is replaced on a regular basis, so you will never be diving with old or worn out gear. We have a selection of several books at the shop that can help you decide which shore dive you want to do, and beyond that we may make suggestions based on the day and water conditions.
Location description:
Hawaii has over 250 species of fish that divers typically encounter, of which 30% are endemic or unique to the islands. Because we are the newest inhabited island in the world, we do not have a fringe reef surrounding the island. This puts the diver in a unique position of being in very close proximity to deep water, thereby increasing the chance of seeing some pretty large creatures. Over the years we have seen many. Some of the most commonly encountered are eagle rays, manta rays, spinner dolphins and the giant trevally or ulua as we know it here in the islands. We sometimes run across whale sharks, pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins, and on very rare but exciting occasions see some of the larger gamefish as well as the occasional white tip reef shark. All in all, Hawaii holds out the opportunity for some pretty fabulous photographs.
As we leave the entrance to Honokohau harbor, on our immediate right 200 feet away is ``Turtle Haven``, followed by 3 buoys at ``Turtle Pinnacle``. The harbor seems to draw an abundance of green sea turtles. As they are opportunistic feeders, the harbor offers them a veritable smorgasbord. Ahi, mahi mahi, ono, whatever is caught that day, someone is sure to drop a carcass over the side for the turtles to munch on.
The next site has several names ``Hallway``, ``Suck-em-Up`` and ``Skull Cave`` are all the same mooring ball, and when conditions allow it provide some incredible diving. Exactly 100 years farther on are two moorings. Inside and Outside ``Aquarium``.
Approximately 250 yards further down the coast (now about 2 miles from the harbor) is Wawahiwaa Point. Most dive shops call this site Pyramid Pinnacle. We at Big Island Divers however know a secret about this site so we choose to call it ``Spaceship``. It is one of our favorites.
Heading north another 1/2 mile brings us to ``Pine Trees - North``, and six more mooring balls. The first two are ``Golden Arches``. Each mooring is above an archway, and the first is filled with ta`ape or blue stripe snapper. Imported from the Marquises in 1958, their bright yellow color adds the ``golden`` to golden arches. A few hundred feet further on is ``Whackies``, followed by ``High Rock ``. Whackies is named after a large yellow margin moray that used to think he was a cobra. At least he assumed that position whenever approached. High Rock Pinnacle is pretty self explanatory. It is the highest pinnacle in the Pine Trees - North diving area. The next stop is ``Lion Fish Arch``, but the lionfish disappeared. We should probably rename it ``Harlequin Heaven`` though as we have a beautiful pair of harlequin shrimp available at one of the coral heads. Just inside of this mooring is ``Creatures Reef``, one of our most eclectic sites. Sand, pinnacles, canyons, flats.....you name it this site has it.
