Company description The Diving Experience in the Crystal River, Rainbow River and King`s Bay area is World Famous and every year many people from all over the world visit with us to SWIM WITH THE MANATEE! We are very proud to be a senior member of this professional dive community.
There is no finer way to explore the magical underwater world of the Nature Coast than by scuba diving. The sparkling waters of the Crystal River beside the Plantation Inn provides access to the very best dive sites. From November through March, be prepared to meet the gentle giant of the river the manatee, source of the mermaid legend. Other popular sites include Kings Springs, downriver from the Plantation Inn, and many caves and grottoes of Kings Bay. Do not miss the excellent diving at Rainbow Springs (named for its amazing variety of multi-colored fish and plants), Devil`s Den, and Blue Grotto, all of which are within easy distance of The Plantation Inn.
``But I don`t scuba,`` you say. With expert professional instruction at the Plantation Inn, you can become a certified scuba diver in just three days.
We offers P.A.D.I. Scuba Diving Certification Courses, which include Open Water Scuba Certification, Open Water Referral Dives, Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, Refresher Course.
But if time does not allow, how about snorkeling in the glassy shallows of the Crystal River. You`ll probably still get to see a manatee or two!
Tours begin at 8:00 A.M. daily. Please arrive no later than 7:45 A.M. Reservations are Required. Our BRAND NEW boats accommodate 17 people and operate numerous tours daily.
We work together with Local, State and Federal Governments and Specialized Fish, Game & Wildlife Organizations to consistently maintain the best quality for the area Manatee Tour Program. There are many restrictions that apply to our dive area. We ask that you abide by all Federal Enforced Manatee Protection Programs. Awareness Instruction is conducted in all our Tour Programs.
We love the manatees and have learned to balance your desire to see the manatees with respect to the animal, the laws, and the local environment. We are the proud sponsors of the Manatee Fund under the guidance of the Friends of the Chassahowitzka Wildlife Refuge.
Manatees are curious and playful when you are quiet and let them initiate interaction. We show a ``manatee manners`` video, before you dive, review a final manatee briefing and get into the water to videotape and supervise your tour to ensure the best opportunity and manatee encounter for all.
Manatees are sensitive to movement and sound, so we do not allow diving into the water. It is almost assured that the bubbles will scare them away. You can not get underneath these surface dwellers as it frightens them.
On tour we are in an average of 10 feet of water, and it is against the law to pursue the manatees in any way. So if they are sleeping or eating on the bottom, they should be left alone.
It is not difficult to snorkel and most people become comfortable with this diving method. We recommend you practice in our On-Site pool if you have an opportunity. This will allow you more comfort in the water.
Location description: Crystal River is one of the most popular freshwater dives in the world. Divers from around the world have enjoyed the fresh water springs unique to this part of Florida. The springs flow from underground and boil to the surface pumping millions of gallons of water, daily. The force of the water opened caverns that vent in the floor of the river. The water is pure and temperature is a constant 72 degrees F, creating ideal DIVING conditions year round.
The most popular dive site is Kings Springs just a few hundred yards from the Plantation Inn DIVE SHOP. The spring is 75` across and drops straight down 30` to two entrances to cavern which goes to a depth of 60`. Sunlight filters through the water creating breathtaking sights. The photographer will be in paradise with rocks, caves, fish and sunlight. Dolphins in the channel like to hunt smaller fish in the springs... You can never predict what will be there.
Crystal River is also the ``winter home`` of the largest concentration of manatee`s in North America. In their book: ``Manatees, on location``, Kathy and Tara Darling describe Crystal River as follows. ``Each winter hundreds of giant gray mammals migrate from the Gulf of Mexico up Florida`s Crystal River to the warmth of its hot, fresh water springs. The massing of the manatees is a world class wildlife spectacle... While some locations were interesting study sites, none even came close to Crystal River as a photo location... in this pocket wilderness only a few yards from the edge of town, the wild manatees allow humans to swim among them to observe or photograph eating, playing and even mating behaviors.``
Crystal River diving takes place in King`s Bay which is approximately 2 miles in diameter or 600 acres which makes home to the largest concentration of manatee in the world.
In King`s Bay there is only one area where there is enough depth, that is the King Springs. It is 75 feet in diameter, 28 feet deep in the basin and there is one cavern that reaches 50 feet. The cavern is large, limestone rock composition and you cannot lose light as it penetrates through the two entrances. There is a large gathering of fish around the openings in the winter and a great collection of fossils in the cavern. Overall a small dive-site and visibility in the basin can go from Crystal to 10 feet depending upon water conditions. A great dive for new divers and silhouette photography.
Rainbow River, in Dunnellon which is 20 miles from our location, is a beautiful location and offers a variety and abundance of freshwater gar, bass, brim and turtles. The bottom is sand, lime rock and ribbon grass.
