Location description:
We have finally scheduled the trip many of you have been waiting for: Porpoise Bay! Dive the Chaudiere! The Chaud’ is a 366-foot Canadian destroyer escort ship. It was put on the bottom by the British Columbia Artificial Reef Society for all of us to enjoy. You won’t believe it when you make your first descent, and you begin to see this awesome shipwreck come into view.
Canada is world renowned for having some of the BEST diving on the planet. Personally, I believe the dives I have done in Porpoise Bay are some of the best I have ever done. Dive spectacular wall dives, and enjoy 50- to 150-feet of visibility. If you like cold-water diving, you will love diving British Columbia.
Cost for the trip is $425, payable to Thunder Reef Divers. A $150 deposit is required to hold your spot. The entire balance must be paid off by January 23. Room, meals and airfills are included, as well as at least 8 boat dives. Three meals a day will be provided on Friday and Saturday. Breakfast and lunch will be provided Sunday. You are on your own for food Thursday, but there is a pub/restaurant right next door to where we stay.
Each person will also be responsible for getting there. It takes about 4Ð… - 5 hours to drive from Vancouver, WA to Vancouver, BC. You will have to cover the cost of gasoline, and a $26.65 (Canadian currency) ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay (Vancouver) to Langdale (Sunshine Coast). However, most people attempt to minimize these costs by carpooling. You can see the ferry schedule, and rates by going to www.bcferries.com. We plan to leave early Thursday morning, and leave Sunday afternoon. This will put you at home sometime around 10 p.m. or so Sunday night, depending on which ferry we hit. You may also consider bringing some cash to tip the hard-working boat crew who help make diving so great.
Remember, you will need a passport to enter Canada, and to re-enter the United States. You will need to bring your own scuba gear, with the exception of scuba tanks. In fact, it is recommended that you leave scuba tanks at home, unless you just can’t live without them. If you bring tanks, be ready to declare them as “hazardous cargo†when you get to the ferry terminal. You will also need to bring a sleeping bag. Nitrox is available, for an additional cost of around $10-15 per fill, depending on your mix.
