The oldest and most respected agency in the US. The YMCA stands for quality. We develop the entire you. Body, Mind and Spirit. The YMCA is seen as a leader in aquatics. When you See the familiar Y logo, you think of quality and excellence. YMCAs are found worldwide so you know your certification card will be recognized no matter where you go. So learn to dive with a leader.
Learning to SCUBA dive is safe, affordable and requires a modest amount of training. An entry-level certification course takes approximately 32 hours to complete during day and evening classes from a couple of weeks. In order to earn a SCUBA certification, you will participate in classroom sessions and practice essential diving skills in a pool. Finally, you will test your knowledge on a written exam and apply your skills during training dives in a lake, quarry, spring or ocean. Upon completion, you will receive a certification card that identifies you as a trained diver, allowing you to rent SCUBA equipment, participate in advanced training and explore diving destinations. Following completion of all classroom, pool, and open water dives, the student will receive a certification card, a wall certificate, and a SCUBA Program patch with a Open Water chevron. You will be certified as YMCA Open Water Divers.
The history of national dive training in the United States began with the development of the YMCA SCUBA Program. As divers and instructors, we have dedicated ourselves to the quest for ever-better ways to teach others to enjoy the underwater world. That is our heritage. Throughout the history of sport diving, the YMCA has maintained unsurpassed standards. Those standards have changed as our knowledge and depth of experience have changed. Others have followed. That is our record. The first instructors, certified in Chicago, Ill. in 1959, provided the dedication and knowledge that became our tradition. We have now trained divers throughout the world and helped to form other dive training organizations. Throughout our history we have worked tirelessly to improve diver safety and enjoyment with a parallel sense of responsibility toward the underwater world which we explore. Our accomplishments are known. Today, as yesterday, no sport diver in the world is better trained than the man or woman who has met the high standards of YMCA SCUBA. In the 40 years since our inception, YMCA SCUBA continues to provide the highest level of community-oriented education for divers and instructors based on the principles of the YMCA triangle: the Spirit, the Mind and the Body. These principles are the core philosophy of the YMCA, and YMCA SCUBA bases all training and programs on these ideals.
