Company description Wanna Dive is a small scuba business specializing in dive instruction, DAILY BOAT DIVES and AWESOME MANTA NIGHT DIVES in Kona on the big island of Hawaii. Our goal is to provide personalized service to individuals or small groups (Yep, we`ll go shore diving with just two divers, our boat takes a maximum of 6 passengers) and to have some fun while doing it. If you are looking for scuba diving instruction, a private dive guide or personalized service, then you`ve come to the right spot.
When you sign up for classes with us, if there are more than one in your group, you get the instructor to yourselves. We want to make sure that you get the maximum amount of instructor attention and actual dive time as possible.
To those interested in diving but not sure they would like to certify, or to those who would like to dive but don`t have the time to certify, we offer introductory dives. On an intro dive we will have a short course on dive basics (How to dive, equipment, safety concerns, etc.) and proceed to the water where we will practice a few necessary skills, first on the surface and then just under the surface.
Intro dives are a great way to ``get your feet wet`` in diving. You will be with an instructor diving approximately a 20 to 40 foot depth. This is the depth where most of our reef life is found and you will have the opportunity to see all kinds of neat creatures. Your 1st dive will probably last roughly 25 to 40 minutes (it`s an exciting time, and most people breath a little heavy the first few minutes of the dive). When you dive a second tank, you will usually be relaxed by the end of the first dive and the 2nd tank will likely last 5 to 10 minutes longer, the diving will feel more natural and you`ll have more time to look around.
At the end of the Open Water Diver course you will be a certified diver. This course will teach you the basics of diving and you will be able to dive without an instructor (note: know your limitations, it is always recommended to dive with a dive professional or experienced diver when trying new locations or conditions).
I like to run this course over a period of 3-4 days. The first day will concentrate on academics and skill building dives in pool or ocean, the next 2 days we will do 2 fun dives each day, with an emphasis on practicing what you have already learned. After the third day you are a certified diver. I am a firm believer that an extra couple dives really helps to develop and refine skills learned during the class so I offer an additional days of two tank diving at our multi-day discount rate. This makes for a great opportunity to dive for fun and enjoy some new dive sites without paying normal charter prices.
The Open Water dives are off our boat. You can request that one of the Open Water days be from shore to see what shore diving is like. If the water is a bit rough for shore diving I usually do both days off the boat because access to calm water can almost always be found just by driving the boat around a corner.
For those of you coming over to vacation, keep in mind this course will take a fair amount of your time if you don`t study ahead - I can arrange to send you the study materials prior to your arrival - study materials usually take a couple of days to cover and with so many things to do on the Big Island you may wish to spend that time doing anything but studying. In general, you will be way ahead of the game if you finish the study materials and fill out the knowledge reviews prior to making your trip.
Price for this course is $395. Study materials are extra. Most people pick up their study materials prior to coming for the class, I will be happy to mail you an Open Water CrewPack for $45 if you`ve signed up for the class and can`t find one locally. Our $395 price includes all equipment. I won`t charge you rental fees for gear, or make you buy scuba gear for the class.
Location description: Our recently re-powered Radon boat allows us to offer trips to dive sites we could not reach from shore. Miles of Hawaii shoreline is now our dive playground to explore. We carry a maximum of 6 passengers and we cater to the skill level of the divers we have on board on that day.
Our typical day starts at 9:00 am at the Honokohau Harbor public boat launch. After gear set up, paperwork, boat briefing and such, we hit the water for a great day of diving.
We like to run a casual charter, no rush or hurry, so on a typical day we are likely to be coming back into the launch at some time between 1:00 and 2:30, depending on where we go, how many on board, etc. After finding out what our customers for the day wish to look for, we`ll head off for the first dive site. We generally don`t choose sites `til we hit the water, we`re looking at water conditions at that time so we can show you the best visibility and best conditions available on any given day.
Once everyone`s in the water and ready to go, we`re diving! There will be a DM who`s looking for critters to show divers at all times, we usually have a few interesting critters stashed at each dive site. We don`t expect you to hold hands and follow us super tightly, but we like to keep everyone within a reasonable distance and heading the same direction as the DM. As divers run low on air, we will get them back to the boat to ascend and then continue on with the rest of the group - most sites have patterns we can run which allow us to show the majority of the site, drop off those at 500 psi, and then continue on to show something else to divers who have better air consumption.
Our diving is generally multi-level diving with generous, computer driven profiles. If you don`t have a computer, one will be provided for the day. The vast majority of dive sites here have both deep and shallow water available on the same site, so we can see varying types of critters and reef structure on a single dive. Depending on depth, air consumption and such, dives can often run anywhere from 50 to 70 minutes or longer.
We generally try to mix up the types of sites you`ll see for the second dive. If the first dive was a reef dive, we might try something more topography oriented, or critter specific, depending on what the divers want to see. If everyone on the boat is comfortable diving, we often will do a one way ``drift`` for the second dive. This is a great way to cover a fair amount of ground and see a lot of the area... we put in at one spot, and the boat Captain will follow the divers` bubbles and pick them up down the reef a ways at the end of the dive. One of the benefits of a smaller boat is with the smaller number of divers we carry (2-6 usually we`re not to max capacity), it`s easy to manage this type of diving. One way dives also allow us to do spots you can`t generally do from a mooring because there`s no having to turn around - some of our more interesting dives are drift only.
