Company description
Captain Rob is a graduate of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, class of 1993. Since graduation He has worked on Oil Tankers, Navy Research Vessels, Gambling ships, Tug boats, and most recently as first officer aboard a coastwise cruise ship. During this time Rob spent three years as captain of the Giant Stride, the boat he now owns and operates. Rob is also an avid diver and began his diving career in Florida back in 1987.
The M/V Giant Stride is a 30 foot Canaveral Custom Dive Boat, equipped with twin Volvo diesel engines. There is a full head area, a v-berth and a hot water heater for hot showers and rinsing off cameras. She is Coast Guard Certified for twelve Divers. The dive platform is eight and a half feet wide and extends the vessels length by more than three feet. Entry and exit on this boat is effortless. Divers familiar with the Isles of Shoals or York Beach, Maine may have memories aboard the Giant Stride from when she was the York Beach Scuba dive boat, with Captain Rob at the helm for three years.
Captain Rob`s Dive Charters is a family owned and operated business. We first opened the dive platform in 2000 out of York Harbor, Maine, and moved to Rye Harbor, N.H. in 2001. We look forward to diving with you during our 2004 diving season.
Each day we make two or more trips to the Islands for some very unique diving.
Location description:
Here are some of the dive sites we travel to out at the Isles of Shoals:
*Star Island Wall
Located on the East side of Star Island this dive starts in 45 ft of water and rapidly drops to 95 ft. A sheer granite wall is before you. Wolffish and the occasional spiny dogfish are commonly seen here. Conditions here on the surface can be tricky with prevailing SE winds, but as long as you stick to the dive plan you`ll be glad you came.
*Seal Cove
One of our most traveled to destinations, Seal Cove is located deep within the protective and hazardous rocks of Duck Island. Navigating between three separate shoals the boat anchors in a large pool surrounded by massive rock outcroppings. The maximum depth here is twenty feet. There are usually 30 - 40 seals hanging out in this cove.
*Devils Gorge
Located on the East side of Appledore Island, Devil`s Gorge is best visited at high tide. Starting in about 35 ft of water you make your way in to the gorge following the contour of the bottom rock. The dive flows upward following the gorge into clearer shallow water, it`s a beautiful site. Remember to keep your eyes peeled, this is where legend has it that Captain Haley found two silver bars washed up on shore!!$$
*Appledore Cove
We call this site the cribs because of the large wooden cribbing that lies on the bottom awaiting your inspection. Three large square sections of this cribbing can be swam around over and between, each level presenting it`s own marine ecosystem. This is one of our favorites because it`s protected from the weather and offers a great deal to see.
*Swede`s Cove
This is the ``divers playground``. In about 30 ft or less this is by far one of the most fun to do. Imagine yourself gliding over large cliffs, around and under large boulders and swimming in glacial cuts in granite, most wider than arms length across. If you haven`t dove this one you`ve got to experience it yourself!
*The Anchor!
The newest spot in our lineup takes you down 85 ft to an 1800`s era Anchor! We don`t know what ship she came from or how she got there but we`re looking. Meanwhile join us on an exciting trip down to see where she lies, a dramatic sheer granite wall and to the west a small cave with large anemones on the ceiling.
*Jay Lewis Cove
This site just Southwest of Star Island is a great place to explore. Located on the back side of the Star Island Hotel this is a great place to go when the wind is from the North or Northeast.
*Haley`s Cove
This is a nice relaxing sandy bottom dive. Located within Gosport Harbor this site is protected in virtually all wind conditions. Swimming shoreward leads to a man made Jetty (Built with the proceeds from those silver bars Captain Haley found on Appledore Island) and further leads to a small tidal lagoon with crystal clear water.
