Company description Dive Makai Charters operates from Kailua-Kona, on the west coast of the island of Hawaii, the southernmost spot in the United States. Also known as the Big Island and the Volcano Isle, the island is the current home of the volcano goddess, Pele. Commuting between Mauna Loa and Loihi, the sub sea volcano that will be the next island in the chain, Pele keeps her main residence in the volcano Kilauea, which has been continuously erupting for over 17 years, making the Hawaii the only state in the unions that is physically growing in size. Still active Mauna Loa and her dormant sister, Mauna Kea are two of the world`s largest shield volcanoes.
Hawaii is the youngest (less than one million years old) and largest island in the Hawaiian chain. The combination of a dry climate on the leeward (west) side of the island, lava rock coast and the island`s unique shape produces some of the consistently best diving conditions and visibility in the world7

Hawaii`s youth and isolation in the mid-Pacific, has blessed it with fewer species than other areas, but more endemism than almost anywhere else. Close to 30% of its fish species have evolved into new and unique versions of their parent species, and are found nowhere else in the world. The same is true for our spectacular variety of ``critters`` from the rare, exquisite Harlequin shrimp to the intelligent octopus. Isolation and cooler waters (73-81 degrees) have limited our coral species, though over 200 species survive and thrive here. Our soft corals are few, but in protected areas our hard coral beds are both a beauty to behold and nature`s ``condominiums``, housing a seemingly endless variety of animals.
During the winter, you can watch in awe as our temporary guests, the Humpback Whales, hurl their massive bodies out of the water in a full breach, or delight in observing the calves leap and frolic. Our resident schools of playful Spinner dolphins often escort us between dive sites and frequently visit us underwater.
Location description: Dive Makai, located on the Kona Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii, caters to the discriminating diver seeking to grasp an understanding of the richness and incredible variety of our underwater world. Through our extensive briefings, our slow, slow underwater pace, our encyclopedia of hand signs, and our ability to recognize and communicate rare and unusual animals and behaviors, we turn what might be ``ordinary`` dives into a fascinating and often humorous photo of daily life on the reef.
We offer a truly unforgettable experience for divers of all levels, from beginners seeking a basic understanding of the reef to the experienced photographer searching for the shot of a lifetime.
