Company description We view diving as a fun, relaxing, intellectually and spiritually fulfilling endeavor. Therefore we have no arbitrary time limit on the dives and we travel very slowly underwater, wanting you to see and experience as much as possible. You are free to dive with one of us, having us show you creatures and behaviors we know well or be off a-ways in your own world. You will not hear us banging on our tanks underwater, see us herding people around or chasing and harassing marine life. We`re here to accompany you on an adventure that we hope will become one of your cherished diving memories.
Started in 1979, Mike Severns Diving has become known for taking small groups of comfortable certified divers to both popular and off-the-beaten-path areas for truly educational, personalized diving. Diving in Hawaii is strikingly different from diving in many other parts of the world (fully a quarter of the marine life can be found only in Hawaii!) and an experienced guide can make a world of difference. Our crew is very experienced and safety conscious, and we put no restrictions on dive time as long as computers and air allow. Perhaps the words of our divers best describe the experience we offer.
We typically do two-tank boat dives off of Molokini and Maui and the divers (and the weather) determine exactly where we will dive on any given day. When we have people who have been diving with us before, of course we try to make sure they see different places. We cater to photographers in that we have photography experience ourselves and know what subjects photographers are likely to want and what they cannot photograph in other parts of the world. Because we travel slowly underwater, photographers have time to spend with the animals instead of trying to keep up with a group covering as much terrain as possible. We can`t say enough about the photography opportunities in Hawaii. They are superb, both above and below water. And if you come during humpback whale season, you can add them to your list of subjects!
If you are interested in reading about Hawaii before you get here, a recommended reading section is provided.
These are 2-tank boat dives for certified divers and the locations of the actual dives are always determined in the morning depending on the interests of the divers and on the weather. We do not take snorkelers. For information on 3-tank dives and Coral Spawning dives, please see Special Charters.
Meeting time is 6:15 AM, and we return between 11:30 and 12:30. If you`re wondering why we meet so early, the almost daily tradewinds start to pick up around 11:30 or 12:00 and this allows us to be underwater or on our way home when they start.
Pilikai (embrace the sea) is a 38-foot painted aluminum Munson with twin 300 hp engines, hard-top sun roof, head, broad swim platform, ladders designed especially for divers wearing fins, and loads of deck space. A fresh water shower is available for rinsing off and for rinsing cameras. We take twelve divers on the boat; however, the divers are split into two groups of six for a peaceful, uncrowded experience underwater.
We offer ScubaPro BC`s and ScubaPro regulators with computers. We have 3mm or 5mm wetsuits depending on your size (3mm for people over about 145 pounds and 5mm for people less than about 145 pounds who chill more easily). Water temperature varies from 75 degrees F (24 degrees Celsius) in Jan, Feb, Mar to 82 degrees F (28 degrees Celsius) in July, Aug, Sept. There is no thermocline. Unless you weigh more then 200 pounds or are very warm blooded, don`t even THINK of wearing just a fleece dive skin!
Safety is a high priority. In our twenty-five years of operation we are accident-free. We carry a high quality oxygen system and all crew are well-trained in its use. All crew are also current in CPR and first aid. VHF radios and a cellular phone are on-board for communication.
Location description: Dive sites are always determined when we get out on the water in the morning depending on wind, current, visibility, surf, and the requests and abilities of the divers. Typically one of the two dives is someplace at Molokini, unless it is very rough or unless no one onboard is requesting Molokini. There is no way to predict a particular dive site even a day in advance because the wind might not do what is predicted, we could get to a spot and see that the current is too strong or that visibility is horrible, etc. What we`ve found over the years is that divers are much happier diving sites that are good for that particular day, than they are diving a ``guaranteed`` site in unfavorable conditions.
We have learned over the years that dive sites change over time. An animal may stay for a few months and then disappear! So, rather than dwell on exactly what is at a particular site at the moment, we`ve described what is common to general areas instead. Who knows what will be at what particular site when you visit?
Molokini Marine Life Conservation District
A fifteen minute boat ride away, the little volcanic islet of Molokini offers some of our most exciting diving. A volcano sitting on a three hundred foot bottom, its sides either slope up or rise vertically providing the only wall diving in the area. It is here that we are most likely to see pelagic animals like manta rays or whale sharks and it is here that you will see some of the most beautiful coral Hawaii has to offer. We could go on and on about Molokini. When visiting scientists, photographers and filmmakers come here, Molokini is their number one choice for many reasons. While diving along Maui is similar to diving off of Lanai or the Big Island, diving at Molokini is distinctly different. Fish that have seen numerous divers and snorkelers for years and have been protected in the marine preserve will let divers approach more closely than usual. There are several species of fish that we do not commonly see except at Molokini. And, like we said, we`ve been lucky to see many big animals such as whale sharks and manta rays here over the years. This is truly Hawaii`s Premier Marine Preserve.
The Back Wall of Molokini:
Much ado has been made of the back wall of Molokini. Rodale`s Scuba Diving once named it the best wall dive in the US. Surely it is the most dramatic topography in our area. The wall, sheer in places, drops vertically out of sight, even with the over one hundred foot visibility that is common here. Uncommon at other sites, pyramid butterflyfish hover in loose aggregations picking plankton out of the water column; black coral houses long-nose hawkfish and gobies; and orange cup coral blankets the shaded undersides of large overhangs. Whitetip reef sharks can also be seen here with more frequency than most of the other sites we dive.
