Company description
“Snappa†is a 35ft. fiberglass custom sport fisherman, USCG inspected and licensed to carry up to 12 passengers. She is powered by a GM 6V-92TA 550 H.P. diesel with a cruising speed of 16 knots. The cabin is enclosed with cushion seating, a dinette, one bunk and a head. A full compliment of the finest quality electronics is located on the bridge.
Snappa Fishing & Diving Charters has been incorporated for 24 years. We offer both inshore and offshore fishing trips, shark cage diving, ash burials at sea, bird watching and lighthouse tours. Private groups and individuals are welcome.
We have been seen on National Geographic Explorer, NESN and Chronicle. Feature articles have appeared in the Wall St. Journal, Boston Globe, Yankee Magazine, and the Rodale`s Scuba Diving. All fishing tackle and bait is provided on fishing trips. Divers must provide their own gear. The boat provides two cages, a dive ladder and platforms.
The owner of the Charter boat ``Snappa``, Charlie Donilon has been in the business for 35 years. He holds an Associates Degree in Commercial Fisheries and Marine Technology from the University of R.I. and a Bachelors Degree in Industrial Arts Education from R.I. College. He is also a full time firefighter for the city of Warwick, R.I. with 18 years experience, six of those years being spent on rescue. During his 35 years on the water he has worked off southern New England and the Florida coastline.
When on duty at the fire station, Charlie is unavailable to captain the Snappa. That’s where his alternate captains are put to work. Joe Doyle and Jarrett Brogno each have more than 12 years experience on the boat. Rich Browning is our latest addition with 4 years experience. Starting out as mates, they progressed to captain. The owner has complete faith that his captains will produce a safe, enjoyable and productive day for your group..
RI waters offer a variety of different fish. That is why we offer a mixture of trips to match each fishery. Our 4 hr. mini trip is an excellent trip to introduce children to light tackle saltwater fishing. It’s ideal for those who quickly become restless. The boat remains within one mile from land, which should eliminate most seasickness. Fluke, sea bass and porgies are the fish we target. This is our least expensive fishing trip. The 5 and 6 hr trip allows us to fish Block Island waters for larger bass and bluefish. The 8 hr. full day allows for a combination of different fishing. Offshore fishing is available for those who would like to pursue shark, tuna, marlin and mahi mahi.
``Snappa`` has been involved with the National Marine Fisheries Shark Tagging Program. Results from our tagging provide useful information concerning feeding, reproduction, growth, and migration habits. Of the 1921 sharks that have been tagged and released, 183 have been recaptured. Our most notable tag releases were from a 20 ft. Great White Shark weighing approximately 4000 lbs. and a 4 ft. Great White. One being the largest and the other being one of the smallest Great Whites ever released for the N.M.F. Shark Tagging Program. A number of our sharks were at liberty for as long as 12 yrs. prior to recapture. Notable returns have come from areas as distant as the Gulf of Mexico, Venezuela, the Azores and off the west coast of Africa near the Cape Verde Islands some 2,700 miles away. The types of sharks one may encounter in our waters include the Dusky, Blue, Thresher, Basking, Sandbar, Great White, Hammerhead, Mako and Tiger.
