Elite Divers was founded in August 1987 by it`s current owner, Nick Warden. Work began in Sept. 1987 on the Rockaway, NJ facility, with the installation of a 22` x 42` x 14` deep concrete pool. Today, Elite Divers is one of the few Dive Stores that boast a complete aquatic training facility, from classrooms, video & meeting rooms, clean changing facilities to our large repair and retail area. Location description: Some of our favorite dive sites:
*Great Isaac
Depth: 90 ft
The Great Isaac was a very large V-4 class tugboat, but not large enough to survive being gashed six feet deep in the engine room. The wreck now lies intact on its port side, buried to the mid-line. It is one of the premier wrecks of southern New Jersey.
*Vizcaya
Depth: 80 ft
The sinking of the Vizcaya was truly a maritime tragedy. The coal schooner Cornelius Hargraves was apparently under full sail at night with no running lights when it struck the Vizcaya, almost cutting the steamer in half. The Hargrave`s bowsprit then raked across the Vizcaya`s deck, demolishing the lifeboats and everything else in its path. The Vizcaya sank in minutes, and soon afterwards the Hargraves settled to the bottom nearby.
Survivors of the Cornelius Hargraves picked up several from the Vizcaya in their lifeboat, while a few survived by clinging to the protruding mast tops or were picked up by passing ships. None of the women and children aboard the Vizcaya survived.
Today, the Vizcaya is a large low debris field, the highest points being the boilers and engine. It occasionally produces artifacts, and is known as a good lobster wreck. I am told that the deck beams in the drawing below are greatly exaggerated, and that the boilers are much bigger than shown.
*San Saba
Depth: 80 ft
Being a hazard to navigation, the San Saba was demolished a week after sinking. Today she sits in 80 ft of water in two mangled pieces of wreckage. The bow section is a jumble of hull plates, with winches and other machinery still visible. The stern section, some 250 ft away is also broken up. The boilers are still visible at the end closest to the bow. Her propeller can still be found, as well as wreckage off to the starboard side. Many artifacts can still be found. Glassware, brass, .22 caliber bullets, and china are still being brought up with a little digging. The San Saba is sometimes called the ``Southwest Barge``, or the ``Magnolia Wreck``, for the anti-friction metal bars she was carrying.
