Company description
We offer you a myriad of dynamic Pacific Ocean based liveaboard adventure vacations. The mission of HORIZON CHARTERS is to help you develop a relationship with the dynamic ocean environment. It is our goal to provide you with impeccable service in the safest, most relaxing atmosphere possible. Our hope is that you will create many new friendships while onboard and take home a respect and genuine concern for the ocean and it`s diverse inhabitants.
Captain Greg Grivetto:
Greg Grivetto’s love for the sea was formed in his pre-teen years as he ventured out onto the Pacific with his parents onboard their small charter fishing boat. Having experienced the ocean and its inhabitants at such a young age he grew to love the liquid environment and vowed one day to share his knowledge and love for the ocean with others.
In his 19 years as captain, he has taken divers, whale watchers, bird watchers and sightseers the entire 750 miles of the Pacific coast of Baja and has spent innumerable days exploring California’s Channel Islands and offshore seamounts. “My reason for working on and in the ocean for as many years as I have is very simple to understand for those of us that have been fortunate enough to spend any amount of time at sea. I encourage everyone with a sense of adventure to experience the ocean and embrace the wonder of all it has to offer.â€
Jennifer, Greg’s wife, is just as much an advocate for the ocean and stands alongside him in all of his endeavors. “I met Jennifer on the ocean and immediately found her as someone that has as much an appreciation for this environment as me.†With the Grivetto family’s newest addition coming just two years ago, Greg and Jennifer are not at sea as much as before, but are working hard to ensure that Horizon Charters remains at the forefront in customer service and environmental standard.
Captain Chris Thompson (Horizon):
Chris grew up racing sailboats and free-diving off the coast of Santa Barbara, California. After a short stint as a guide on a dude ranch in Wyoming and at a tourist lodge in Costa Rica, he returned to the ocean in Santa Barbara and crewed on a commercial fishing boat.
Chris, knowing that taking from the ocean on a constant basis was not in his calling, left commercial fishing and joined Dr. Milton Loves` research team at the University of California Santa Barbara to study reef and oil rig fish populations. Wishing to share his love for the ocean with others, he moved to Catalina Island and joined the Catalina Island Marine Institute at Toyon Bay to teach marine biology to students from the mainland.
He is now proud to be part of the Horizon Charters team, helping bring scuba and free-divers to inspiring locations throughout the southern California and northern Baja island archipelagos. His knowledge and love for the ocean brings a strong presence to his sixth year onboard the good ship Horizon!
Captain Gary Tanizaki (Horizon and Ocean Odyssey):
Entering his 9th year with the Horizon Charters team, Gary has proven to be the one of the hardest working members on the squad. You`ll appreciate his coy sense of humor along with his dedication to the ocean and all the animals in it.
This San Diego State grad has spent over 20 years working either on or in the ocean and has a good story for every occasion!
Mark Grindley (AKA, Chef Marko), Horizon Cook Extraordinaire:
Mark, now in his 14th year with the Horizon Charters Team, has the reputation of being one of the finest cooks to ever raise a spatchula onboard a live-aboard dive vessel! Mark is more than an accomplished cook, he is THE MAN! It is one thing to be able to cook up a scrumptious meal in the comfort of an stable kitchen in a gourmet restaurant. But to be able to do it onboard a boat, in an environment that is sometimes moving with the motion of an earthquake that is approaching an eight on the Richter Scale, is quite a feat!
Location description:
One of the most virgin dive destinations in the world, located 155 miles off of the Baja, California peninsula and 480 miles south of San Diego, this destination is for the true adventurer in all of us!
Due to this destinations remote nature, only a handful of people have ever dived here, but from all reports that we have received, this destination could rival Guadalupe Island as Baja`s most exciting dive destination!
We expect to find a mixture of temperate and tropical fish species along with large pelagics! Tuna, wahoo, northern yellowtail, clouds of mackeral and damsels, reef sharks and possibly mobulas or mantas! The cool thing is the unknown, so turn on the adrenaline, fire up the Nitrox and let`s go dive Rocas Alijos!
The Changing of the Seasons:
California may not have easily recognizable seasons, but on the ocean, the changing of the seasons is definite and clear. The Humbolt and Davidson currents that parallel the California coast transport cool water (mid 50`s F) from the north into our southern California waters. The cooler water stimulates the kelp forests in a cycle of regrowth at a rate of up to two feet per day. The pelagic fish that have gathered in the summer and fall months have headed south in search of warmer Baja waters. The Channel Islands settle into a winter routine with the homeguard kelp bass, giant black sea bass, schooling barracuda and other perrenial species remaining. Marine mammals abound in the waters around the Channel Islands during the winter months. The once endangered California Gray whale passes close by enroute north and south on its 12,000 mile migration. Seals, sea lions and elephant seals also cruise the waters and haul out on the shores of these islands. Spring`s arrival warms the water (upper 50s to lower 60s) and the hearts of the ocean`s inhabitants. Seals and sea lions are giving birth to pups, sea bass and bat rays display dramatic mating rituals and garibaldi fish guard their nests. Massive schools of sardines and mackerel are a prelude to summer. The waters warm to the mid 60s to low 70s and soon summer is here. Pelagic fishes such as yellowtail, yellowfin tuna and bluefin tuna are attracted to the islands by the endless food supply. Blue whales migrate through our waters and pods of common dolphins stretching as far as the eye can see often surround the boat. Before you know it Fall is here with some of the clearest and calmest water of the year. Water temperatures in the mid to upper 60s are delightful when combined with water clarity so great one gains the unreal sensation of flight. The seasons change and the cycle continues as it has for thousands of years. Our goal is to observe these changes while not disturbing nature`s beauty. Whichever season you choose, each offers a unique and exciting diving experience.
