Location description:
Our travel reports are based upon all of our research, expectations, and experiences while planning and taking this trip. We hope that it is useful to you and helps make your trip planning a little easier. If you have a question that is not addressed here, please email us we will be happy to help you.
Here is an example of report:
"* Santa Barbara Island
Located about 5 hours by boat from San Pedro, Santa Barbara Island is one of our favorite dive destinations. Sea lion interactions with divers can almost be assured. On one of our trips last year we were surrounded by several hundred playful juveniles, with a few older male sea lions observed as well.
Sea lions and seals are classified as pinnepeds. Sea Lions are differentiated from seals by their external ear flaps. Sea Lion behavior is both playful and inquisitive, they seem to enjoy interaction with divers . The best way to observe them is to pick out a spot and just hover for a while, they'll provide the entertainment. They'll come in close for a look at you and just as quickly depart. They'll pick up a sea urchin or sea cucumber in their mouth and release it mid water and catch it again like a play toy. Just remember, don't reach out a hand to try and touch them, they may nip back! It is best to just hang out and watch the show.
In addition to the sea lions, there are brittle stars, Spanish Shawl nudibranchs, several varieties of anemones, purple hydrocoral, gorgonians, starfish and of course the ubiquitous sea urchin. We also lucked out and saw a few Sea Salps as well.
Getting to Santa Barbara Island can be unpredictable. Rough seas can cause the captain to choose an alternate destination, usually Catalina Island. We've made it 9 out of 11 times on both the Great Escape and Cee Ray..."
