Location description: Some words from our member article:
Earlier on in the year I dived The Cod Hole at Byron Bay and wrote it up for Surface Interval, so I wasn`t going to bother this time. However, this one was a beauty.
At the rock, again the bottom could easily be seen at 13mts and Byron Bay was turning it on for us. I was buddied up with Jenny, who despite being only on her fifth dive was remarkably competent and good to dive with, apart from her constant enquires as to what was likely to bite. Little did she know that she was about to see not only one but two sets of the most awesome array of teeth that she would ever have imagined.
On the bottom we were surrounded by Wobbygongs. I looked at Jenny and knew exactly what she was thinking! And we were off to the Cod Hole. As usual I separated myself from the rest of the divers and Jenny followed and within a minute, contact number one. A single large Grey Nurse appeared out of nowhere at about 10mts. It saw us and gracefully glided off beyond the 20mt vis. By this time Jenny had started on her finger nails. We were the only two to see it. Would the others believe us?
At the hole the usual compliment of enormous Snapper, Jewfish and Kingfish were there and a mass of Bullseyes completely blotting out the hole entrance. I`m sure the Snapper were the same as earlier in the year but seemed bigger & even more tame, to the point that you could actually touch them as you swam through them. An enormous cruise missile with a huge grin on it`s face coming straight for me. I don`t know who was more surprised, me or the shark, but as we met eyeball to eyeball it was only about ten feet from me and still coming. It then turned sideways, seemed to pause like a model (guess where my camera was, that`s right at home) it then cracked its tail to let me know who was boss and again glided off into the distance.
What a sight! What a spectacle and what a privilege to be in the water with such a magnificent creature so close and totally wild. Without doubt that was the closest encounter I have ever had with one of these beasts outside the Manly aquarium and at no time did I imagine for a second that I was about to turn the fact that Grey Nurse sharks were harmless into a myth!
Back on board, the boat was abuzz with excited chatter. ``Did you see it? What was that? What? You saw two?``. (Told you they wouldn`t believe us). ``Where you scared?`` Sure I was scared, I was worried that Jenny was about to start on my finger nails`.
So came the end of a fantastic dive that was up there with the best of them. Thanks again to Sun Dive for putting it on and for Jenny for being a good sport & great fun to dive with.
