Company description First formed in 1953 as Black Rock Skindivers, and later in 1955 to its present name, Black Rock Underwater Diving Group (BRUDG) The Group was mainly made up of young members, and was based around the Sandringham area. Members would meet at Sandringham station early on Sunday mornings, to dive areas anywhere between Williamstown and Frankston, places like Mornington were considered too far to travel, for a days dive. New divers were trained to the Standards of the Underwater Skindiver & Fisherman Association, (U.S.F.A.) and a rigorous safety programme was actively pursued. Social events were considered to be an integral part of the Groups activities as it provided a means for including non diving partners and friends into the Group. The Group meetings were held first at a members home, then later on at the Victorian Railway rooms in Melbourne, with the first meeting at the Celtic Club being held the 9th December 1969 and has been held there ever since.
Group`s Objectives
To engage in Low cost, interesting and varied diving of the highest quality.
To maintain an active social environment.
Promotion of safe diving and risk management. To operate within the Laws in the State in which we are diving.
Group Diving Activities
Most diving is done out of members private boats. The boats are mostly fast deep Vee fibreglass hull types in excess of 15 feet long. All are fitted with 2 way radios, depth sounders and most have GPS navigation aids. We generally go out for the entire day taking 2 tanks and lunch with us. Diving is unhurried and we usually manage to find a quiet sunny spot to have lunch. There is often a debriefing at the end of the day at a local hotel. Participants are expected to contribute to the cost of the boats fuel bill. For single day diving boats are generally launched from San Remo (Philip Is), Flinders or Sorrento. This provides access to the best dive locations around Philip island, Westernport Bay, Mornington Peninsular (bayside and backbeach) and the West Coast from Point Lonsdale to Torquay. Whenever conditions permit we would travel to Apollo Bay or Port Campbell.
The Group has made numerous trips to such destinations as Kangaroo Island (S.A), Bass Straight Islands - King Is, Cliffy Group, Hogan Group, Kent Group and Flinders Is, Wilsons Promontory, Eden and Montague Island (Naroma) and such trips are planned for the future. We dive on reefs or wrecks. We dive for fun or to collect sea food. We dive in search of antique bottles. Some of our members pursue underwater photography. Some even do Cave Diving. But mostly we go out to enjoy ourselves.
Group`s Operation
The Group is a member of the Scuba Divers Federation of Victoria and its operation has been formalised by way of a formal constitution which has legal standing The Group has been incorporated in Victoria.

Location description: For those members interested in going to Thailand next year, here is a rough guide to what we may be doing.
Ko Samui, an island on the east side of Thailand, once know for its coconut plantations, but is now slowly being taken over by large tourist resorts, which we will be staying away from.
Most likely we will head to Ang Thong National Park just off Ko Samui, which is a archipelago of 40 small Islands which combines dense vegetation, sheer limestone cliffs, hidden lagoons and white sand beaches. There are a number of options for us, we could go on a 3 day kayaking and camping trip, charter a boat and stay at bungalows, or go on a dive live aboard trip for a few days, for around $400.
Krabi, a small city in the south western part of Thailand, either we will be staying here or a near by village, a good spot to base ourselves, near by there is a 75 million year old shell fossils, eco trips to the near by mangrove swamps, diving around the islands just off shore, and canoeing around the coast as well as many other activities.
The islands of Ko Surin and Ko Similan, ``world renowned among diving enthusiasts for incredible underwater sight seeing``, - The Lonely Planet Travel guide. Also a great spot to see Whale Sharks, there is also a turtle preserve on one of the islands. These Islands are best visited on a live aboard dive vessel, as they are a fair distance from the main land.
This is still in the planning stage at the moment and most likely we will only book the diving part of the trip and leave the rest for when we are in Thailand.
