Company description The Underwater Club organises SCUBA diving for students.
The Club has a broad membership base, with a core of highly active and enthusiastic people. The Club endeavours to make SCUBA accessible to students, by providing inexpensive access to gear, air fills and boat trips. The club owns boats, compressors, wetsuits and SCUBA equipment that are available for the sole use of Club members.
We go diving every weekend that the weather is good. Day trips are organised to dive the Port Phillip Bay Heads area and we go on longer trips to further locations like Wilson`s Prom, Phillip Island, Mount Gambier, Eden, Jervis Bay, etc.
If you haven`t already been certified to dive, you can learn. The Club organises introductory and more advanced courses several times during the year.
The Melbourne University Underwater Club meets every Thursday night at 8:00pm at the Clyde Hotel. Come down and have a chat some time and find out more about the Club, its activities and meet some members.
MUUC Inc. offers PADI dive courses. PADI is the largest SCUBA training agency worldwide and has trained in excess of 8 Million divers. PADI dive qualifications are accepted world wide. We have a number of instructors in the club:
*Uwe Ackermann - PADI Instructor
*Terri Allen - PADI/EFR Instructor
*Dave Grice - PADI/EFR Instructor
*Michael O`Toole - PADI/IANTD Instructor
We also have a number of club members who are Divemasters, and from time to time may assist on courses.
Location description: We offer mainly four types of courses:
*PADI Open Water Course ($390)
This is the entry level diving course and qualifies to dive to a depth of 18 m with a similarly or higher qualified diver. Prerequisites for this course are the ability to swim 200 m and to tread water (float) for 10 min.
The Open Water Course usually runs over two consecutive weekends (or four weeknights (5pm - 9pm) and one weekend).
*PADI Advanced Open Water Course ($330)
This course qualifies you to dive to a depth of 30 m with a similarly or higher qualified diver. Prerequisite is an Open Water Diver qualification. The Advanced Open Water Course normally runs over one weekend, and involves five dives. Three are shore dives, and could include navigation as well as two of search and recovery, naturalist and night. Two are boat dives: deep and wreck or drift.
*PADI Rescue Diver Course, incl. EFR ($375)
This course teaches the skills involved to manage dive accidents, but will also offer many tools to manage your own diving stress and problems. Theory includes (but is not limited to) managing diving accidents, dive gear and related problems, and basic medic first aid. The practical part of the course culminates in scenarios in which the students have to locate and rescue an unconscious diver from depth.
Prerequisite is an Advanced Open Water Diver qualification. To fully qualify as a PADI Rescue Diver, you have to hold a current (i.e. not older than 24 months) CPR qualification, which can be completed as part of the course. The entire course normally consists of one weeknight and a full weekend.
*PADI Divemaster Course (ca. $500)
The role of a PADI Divemaster consists mainly of (a) assisting in dive courses, and (b) leading dives of certified divers. In addition, a PADI Divemaster can conduct a range of snorkel and dive experience programs. It constitutes the first level of a professional diving career. We run this course as an internship-based program.
Prerequisites to enrol in a Divemaster Course are minimum age of 18, a minimum of 20 logged dives, and a Rescue Diver qualification. To finally qualify as a divemaster you need at least 60 logged dives. The PADI Divemaster Course is a time consuming course. Plan an average of 6 months for the completion of your internship.
In addition, we can offer specialty courses like PADI Nitrox or Wreck Diver, IANTD Deep/Nitrox and Advanced Nitrox Diver or CDAA Cavern/Sinkhole on demand, generally in the less busy winter months
