Company description The Monash University Underwater Club is open to all students at monash regardless of campus!!!! It is still a branch of the British Sub Aqua Club (BSAC), and conducts courses for beginners right through to instructors. Once you have joined the BSAC, courses cost as little as $50 for the lifesaving course. If you have even the slightest interest in gaining higher dive qualifications or just want to experience the excitement of SCUBA diving, you`d be crazy not to phone one of the instructors listed on this site.
Membership of the Monash University Underwater Club is open to any authorised user of the Monash University Sports and Recreation Association. Those eligible to join the Association include graduates of any university. Current Monash Students are automatically eligible.
SCUBA Diving is not the cheapest sport to become involved with, however it has many unique and rewarding experiences to offer. If money is an issue (as it is with most of us) then you have taken the right step in joining MONUC. It may not seem like it at first but when you add up all the costs associated with diving commercially you will soon see the savings and benefits in being associated with MONUC, particularly if you choose to further you diving qualification and be an active member in the club.
So the approximate cost to do a beginner course is $450 plus about $70 for the medical. (compares well with 2003 prices of $66 + $20 + $250 + $55 = $391) and on completion of the course you will be an internationally certified diver. You will now be able to go on club trips, dive from the club boat and hire club gear.
This is the bare essential cost for obtaining you diving license. It is however, highly recommended that new divers purchase personal equipment like:
1. Wetsuit, a 7 mm new wetsuit starts at about $400-$450, or you can hunt around for a second hand one if you want to save some money but it may take some time to find the style you want and that fits well.
2. Mask and Fins each starting at about $40-$50.
3. Snorkel, Gloves and Booties at about $20-$30 each.
4. Weight Belt at about $70-$80.
This is the basic gear cost involved, you can of course borrow some of this gear from friends or family to save money. If you are considering making good use of your license you should purchase the above items. As you gain experience you may choose to buy other items, such as safety gear i.e. lights, strobes, a SMB, a knife, etc., but for now what has been mentioned above is the bare essentials for getting started.
Once you have become a member of MONUC you have access to club gear. The club gear includes 14 complete sets of Regulators, BC`s and Tanks
The club gear is restricted for members only. A member may only check out one set of gear, which includes a reg, bc and 1 Tank. The club has a few weight belts and their use is restricted to those doing novice courses. When courses are not running these weight belts are available.
The club has a 6m aluminium boat built especially for the Monash Club. It is capable of taking seven (7) divers (including the driver) and is powered by twin 75HP engines.
The club has a small inflatable (a zodiac) - which is good for two-to-four divers.
The club has a portable compressor for filling tanks when we go away camping!!
The club locker has a compressor which is used for filling club and club member tanks.
Location description: The cost of joining MONUC in 2006 is only:
$20 (student)
$25 (staff)
more others - see membership forms
The benefits and rewards of becoming a member greatly outweigh the initial membership fee. The cost of using club gear and diving from the club boat makes SCUBA diving considerably cheaper than commercial dive shops, and thus easier on the pocket for those wanting to experience SCUBA at an affordable price. On joining MONUC you also get access to cheaper dive courses, socialising with other divers, the club newsletter, club trips and discount at several dive shops.
The club has two meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. The first meeting is from 7.00-7.30pm to discuss official club business.
The second meeting is from 7.30-9.30pm and is for social discussion/general talk/watching videos and the occasional guest Sports Centre (Building 1) at Monash University Clayton. If in doubt of the location go to the reception desk and the friendly staff will point you in the right direction [left]. Everyone is welcome to attend both meetings!!
Feel free to come along and meet some of the other club members. Keep an eye out for the next club newsletter, or go to the club notice board (outside the CO-OP Bookshop) and of course this web site for information on upcoming special events.
We also have drinks at very reasonable prices, and when we have a guest speaker we even have free munchies -how can you resist ?
The club may organise a lunchtime meeting near the club locker, if there is interest - to tell people about the club and show them where to hire BC,REG and Tanks from. This would most likely be on Thursday 2 March or Friday 3 March at 1pm.
Keep an eye on the monuc-general mailing list for confirmation.
