Company description
The Underwater Explorer`s Club lays claim to be the oldest-established scuba diving club in Australia. We formed in 1954 and were incorporated in 1965.
Our Patron, Dave Burchell was sixteen when he lost a leg in an accident while on a train. He grew up determined to join the Navy in World War11, but was rejected due to his lost leg and was finally accepted by the Air Force. After the war he worked on cattle and sheep stations in the Australian outback. After returning to the city he took up the sport of high diving and for 15 years performed with the South Australian Diving Troupe. In 1951 he started skin diving and in 1960 founded the Adelaide Skin Diving Centre. For the next 20 years he was one of the pioneers of diving in Australia and trained hundreds of sport and commercial divers. He was involved in many stunts and projects, including deep dives off the Continental Shelf, exploring flooded goldmines and the underground systems of Mount Gambier. He even tried para-scuba by parachuting from an aircraft in full diving gear. After landing in the sea he continued down and met up with a submarine. Dave has dived a wide variety of locations; Truk Lagoon, The Great Barrier Reef, Fiji, the Aegean and most of the Pacific Islands. His most important dive was during the search for HMAS Perth which was lost during WW11. The Perth bell now lies in the Australian War Museum in Canberra. Dave has been awarded the British Empire Medal and he was the first South Australian to be featured in the National TV program ``This is Your Life``. He has also authored two books.
UEC members enjoy regular day and weekend trips with a variety of boat and shore dives.
Also, a variety of social activities is offered for divers and families.
UEC has been involved with KESAB clean-ups for several years.
For some years, we have been cleaning up under the Rapid Bay Jetty, home of the Leafy Seadragon, the state fish emblem. At times we have collected over 50 kg of
rubbish from that underwater area. We have also been able to influence local district councils about environmental issues in sensitive marine environments.
UEC members have worked with the Dept of Environment and Heritage in discovering and mapping ship wrecks.
Following the tragic deaths of divers in Mount Gambier caves many years ago, the UEC worked with Government to ensure these caves were kept open for safe cave diving.
UEC has also participated in Reef-Watch activities in SA, idenifying local fauna and flora and looking at the impact of changes in the marine environment.
