Company description Welcome to the Underwater Explorers Club of Western Australia (UEC)
Formed in 1954, the UEC is the oldest dive club in Western Australia.
With over 150 members we not only dive together, we get involved in community arranged clean-ups and the monitoring of local environmental impact. Just as important, the UEC are a social club and meet on a regular basis at the Swan Yacht Club.
In 2004, Underwater Explorers Club of WA celebrated its 50th anniversary. It is the oldest SCUBA club in Western Australia and has a distinguished history.
UEC was formed in 1954 and two years later conducted Western Australia`s first organised SCUBA diving school. The high standard of our instruction impressed the authorities so much that we were given the responsibility of training the original Police Diving Team in Perth.
UEC has always been strongly involved in shipwreck exploration. In the 1960`s and 70`s our members provided the core of workers for the early museum expeditions on the Dutch wrecks such as the famous Batavia. Many wrecks on our coast were discovered by UEC members.
Today, UEC members are frequently involved in community arranged clean-ups and the monitoring of local environmental impact, so we may continue to enjoy our unique underwater environment.
UEC volunteers have assisted The Conservation and Land Management to map reefs and survey marine life in the Marmion Marine Park. We also take part in the Australian Marine Conservation Society`s ongoing Dragon Search project.
With over 150 members, the Club enables divers to enjoy WA`s great underwater environment, as well as participate in a vibrant social scene.

The UEC will be assisting the Avon Support Unit (ASU) in the rescue effort for the 2006 Avon Descent over the weekend 5th and 6th August this year.
The Avon Descent is the world`s longest white-water race. People from all over the world participate in all types of paddle craft and custom-made power boats - think oversized esky lid with a ten horsepower motor attached.
This event requires in the vicinity of 150 rescue and recovery personnel, and this year the UEC has been asked to provide between 30 and 40 rescue volunteers, for both in-water and land-based support. In addition, we require 5 to 7 camp support volunteers.
The ASU training schedule is extensive, and includes several opportunities to gain “Swiftwater” and other rescue support training. The training is great fun and prepares our in-water rescue crew, in particular, for the challenges of the race weekend. The next weekend training will be held at Collie on 11th and 12th March.

When I began as the club President in November 2004 I didn`t have any particular agenda to complete during my term but since then a few things have become my ``thing``. The first is that in any decision made by me or by the committee, I will always strive to achieve fairness and equal opportunity within the club for every member. The second is to ensure that new members are welcomed into the club and are made to feel ``right at home`` after one trip or meeting. New members really are the club`s future. That said I`m also very aware of the need to look after our existing members so we all feel as much of the club as each other. The final aspect has been to develop a financial attitude of saving and fundraising for the future of the club. We all know how expensive boating can be, so my goal and that of the committee is to save a healthy amount each year. These issues are often easier to talk about than to achieve but they are foremost in my mind whenever a decision is made.
As for diving, I`m always keen. I have found it difficult to spare the time in the last year with training to become a Skipper consuming a lot of my boat time but I plan to get back in to the swing of it now that I`m qualified. I only became a diver three years ago so being fairly new to it, diving is still as exciting as ever. Most dives these days are for photography as images are a great way to record your dives as many club members are discovering. Underwater photography has made me become a bit of a ``Nudi freak``... Nudibranchs that is, not the other kind. So a good dive for me is spotting a Nudibranch I haven`t seen before. I don`t mind the odd ``prawn dive`` in the river either.
O.K. so the newsletter editor tells me we should expose a little known fact about ourselves ... Well, before diving all my hobbies were motor-sport related. I was a regular rev-head with many years spent racing sedans at the Speedway followed by racing Historic Touring cars at Wanneroo Raceway and country ``Round the Houses`` and Hillclimb events (in a Mini Cooper S mostly but also in an EH Holden for a while) and finally a few years racing Sprint Karts. With the petrol mostly drained from my blood these days not much surpasses a leisurely dive ... although I reckon with a bit of work we could get a couple more Knots out of the boat and race the Ferry to Rotto.
