Company description
Welcome to the Underwater Research Group (URG) of New South Wales, Australia. The URG is a non-commercial SCUBA Diving Club comprising people from all walks of life who share an interest in and a commitment to the underwater world. Its aim is to further all aspects of underwater exploration, research, safety, photography and sport.
Our members are interested in a large range of underwater activities, including marine biology, exploration of wrecks, underwater photography and underwater conservation, but we all share one thing in common, a desire to get wet and have fun under the ocean!
The club operates on a voluntary basis, but is professionally run and organised. We own our own dive boat and tow vehicle. The club has been in existence, in it`s present form, since 1955 and boasts quite a significant history, especially in the area of underwater research.
Diving with Grey Nurse Sharks Research
The URG`s is a regular participant in Grey Nurse shark population surveys conducted by NSW Fisheries. The URG proactively supports the following new NSW Fisheries rules for diving with the Grey Nurse.
Diving rules in critical habitats
The new rules for divers and snorkelleres in each 200-metre grey nurse shark critical habitat areas are:
No scuba diving between sunset and sunrise
No blocking entrances to caves or gutters when the sharks are there
No feeding or touching the sharks
No chasing or harassing the sharks
No electronic shark repelling devices
No underwater scooters.
Life on ``The Net``
This project commenced in 2001, just before the current net was put in place. The counting of the sea-horse population has been, and is an on-going activity by the URG, sometimes when returning from a day`s diving, and sometimes by members visiting Balmoral especially to see what changes there are in the net`s population.
Environmental & Conservation Objectives
As an environmentally aware group, the URG seeks to promote conservation through submissions to appropriate Government Organisations, regarding environmental issues, support for marine conservation issues and by promoting environmentally responsible diving practices amongst divers.
In 1997, we road-tested the Protected Species Survey for The NSW Department of Fisheries, which involved a trek up the north coast.
We participate with Clean-up Australia and have been regularly working with The Australian Marine Conservation Society, Sydney Aquatic Cleaners Klub (SACK) and NSW Waterways Authority, to clean up a number of Sydney Harbour beaches.
Since 1999 we have commenced working with NSW Fisheries on various research and monitoring programs.
Regular Club Meetings
The Club holds its general meetings at The Australian Museum, on the third Wednesday of each month. Entry is from William Street. The meetings start at 7.30 pm. There is the usual business of reports from Club Officers, dive reports from members followed by a Guest Speaker and supper. Guest speakers are selected according to their relevance to the diving, social and conservation issues relevant to the club.
The Annual General Meeting is held in September each year and takes place in the Australian Museum as well.
DAN SEAP Affiliation
The URG has recently developed an affiliation with Divers Alert Network (DAN). DAN SEAP (Divers Alert Network, South East Asia-Pacific) is a non-profit member-based association dedicated to the advancement of recreational diving safety. DAN offers dive insurance to its members.
If you are diving in remote locations (but also close to home), a DAN membership is a good idea. Some dive travel operators actually require DAN membership. The most important benefit of membership is their worldwide emergency evacuation service, but it is certainly not the only benefit.
The URG gets a bonus point for every DAN applicant that quotes our promoter number (P190), so please do so. We will spend these bonus points for dive safety equipment for the club.
Location description:
Our dive boat
The Club boat is a Star 5.9 metre single hull, aluminium vessel, capable of carrying eight divers and a non-diving skipper. It is powered by a Yamaha 175 hp outboard motor. The boat carries a mermaid line, cross-over line, bars and a line for safety stops, and a hooker style decompression setup for safety on deep and wreck dives. The boat carries oxygen and a large oxy-viva kit suitable for multiple divers. The towing vehicle is a 70`s model Holden Statesman, also known as the purple people eater.
Booking a Dive
Members can book onto a dive by contacting the convenor for that dive, as listed in the dive schedule. If there is no convenor listed, then contact either the Dive Officer, who is responsible for the dive schedule, or the Club President.
Maintenance Contributions
The URG is a non-profit organisation. We levy a maintenance contribution on each dive. The current levy applies for a single dive. Please pay the dive convenor at the conclusion of the dive.
Cash - $25.00 per dive
Prepaid sheet of 10 for $225.00 ($22.50 per dive)
Prepaid cards can be purchased from the dive convenor or from the President.
Dive schedule
Check the current dive schedule, ring the listed dive convenor and book on a dive soon! The schedule is published up to 2 months in advance. so there is plenty of time to plan ahead and making a reservation.
Double Dive Special Interest Group
The URG now runs double dive trips for those who like to get two dives done in a morning and are short of time. Two dives can be completed in the same time as a normal single Club dive, but having a roster of boat sitting. Members who are interested in this format of diving are required to acknowledge the rules relating to rostered boat sitting.
Safe Diving Practices
The Underwater Research Group of New South Wales (URG) is a non-profit SCUBA diving club managed by volunteers who, even if they do hold relevant professional qualifications, do not consider themselves to be acting in a professional capacity. All advice given and actions taken are done in good faith, but the committee and agents of the club (including but not limited to the committee, dive organisers, and boat captains) take no responsibility for their advice, actions or omissions, negligent or otherwise. You cannot assume any agent of the club to hold any qualification other than Open Water SCUBA Diving Certification and, in addition, a Waterways boat licence if they are the boat captain.
