Company description he University Underwater Club has been operating for over 25 years and has steadly built up its resources, with a stable membership at around 200-250.
The University Underwater Club (UUC) is affiliated with the UWA Sports and Recreation Association and the UWA Guild of Undergraduates. All University Underwater Club members receive a UWA sports card as part of your dive club membership.
Being a Uni club means that we have uni prices - but you don`t have to be a student to join. Infact you don`t have to have anything to do with UWA or any uni at all. The only requirements are that you are a qualified diver and want to have fun. Not a certified diver yet? Check out the courses we offer...
Membership is `seasonal` running from December 1st to November 30th each year.
Regular Dives
The UUC offers regular weekend trips to Rottnest and Carnac Islands. A double dive at Rottnest including a lunch break on the Island is the most popular trip. Trips to other locations can be requested and arranged. You don`t have to have a buddy to go on boat dives - you can find one on the day.
Each year the UUC offers a range of trips for its members. The costs indicated are approximate and may vary, but they include just about everything! The use of both the truck and boat makes these trips accessible and economical. This is a very cheap way of diving in different and spectacular places, plus you get to meet some pretty cool people in the club. Trips are a must!
If you missed out on the trip you wanted, don`t despair. If you get in quick and organise next years trip you can ensure a place! Other trips with exciting dive sites are available for the rest of the year. The UUC is always looking for new faces to organise trips, and it is a great way of meeting people. Try your luck at Esperance, HMAS Swan, Key Biscayne or HMAS Perth - contact trip coordinator for more information
Anyone can organise a club trip - and it is the best way to assure yourself of a place!
The club maintains almost 30 sets of gear (BCD, regs, tank) with about 20 extra tanks. About half of the reg sets have dive computers. All the equipment is monitored and serviced regularly.
Equipment is available at all times. The clubrooms are open at 6.30 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, for about one hour. But you can get gear any time if you contact the volunteer on roster duty and make a suitable arrangement. You must show your dive certification card and UUC sticker every time you hire gear out.
Learn to dive or improve your skills with the UWA UUC - we believe that we`re the best in town when it comes to scuba training!
You can find info on our courses, costs, schedules, medical requirements etc. in our handy course FAQ.
The main benefit of the club is of course that it offers you the chance to dive more often for less money. And not just local dives, the club trips are the cheapest way you will get to see the best that WA has to offer.
The club owns an 8-meter dive boat, the TANTABIDDI, which can hold 12 divers. We also own a dual cab tray back truck to tow the boat. We maintain almost 30 sets of gear (BCD, regs, tank) with about 20 extra tanks. Many of the regulators have dive computers. All the equipment is monitored and serviced regularly. And gear hire is so cheap, many members put off buying their own.
The club has gathered a large catalogue of great sites over the years, and you will get to dive with people that have been diving in Western Australia for years...
There is also the social aspect to the club… you will never have to worry about finding a buddy again! Regular social events are held throughout the year, including a traditional Christmas in July at Rottnest, to help get us through those winter months. Social evenings are held once a month and often include informative talks from special guests.
Location description: Some words about our recent trip:
Dunsborough 2005
The annual UUC Dunsborough trip was destined to be a huge one. Due to not having an Australia Day long weekend we had to jam pack all the diving possible in to one normal weekend, and what a success that was with total of 9 dives.
We all donned our glow sticks, checked our torches, and waited for darkness to descend. The dive was fantastic. We were the only boat on the Swan so we had the whole wreck to ourselves to enjoy. Torch lights appeared from everywhere as divers explored the outside of the wreck. An array of sea life ranging from flat-head fish to rays was seen in the beam of lights, highlighting the coral and fish residing in the Swan
Scott and Glenn`s powerful torches stood out from everyone, so once we`d finished our dives and were conducting our first safety stop we switched our torches off and enjoyed the darkness. Funnily enough, anywhere with Scott and Glenn can be extremely amusing and entertaining, even when just sitting on the crows nest in darkness, waiting patiently for the time to continue our ascent. They provided us with many laughs as Dan swam too close to the lingering Glenn, losing his fin in the process.
Once back on the boat Dan soon retaliated by nudging Glenn and sending him flying off the side. I was amazed by Glenn`s impressive ability to keep his beer safely above water whilst going under himself!
Once we got back into Dunsborough it was getting pretty late and everyone was hungry. We stopped off and ordered pizzas and beer before heading back to the house. There we found the rest of the crew had arrived, and were enjoying the views from the balcony. After sinking a few brewskis and devouring the pizza, people slowly tottered off to bed, ready for the following day of full on diving on the Swan.
In what seemed like an hour of shuteye, it was time to rise and shine for the first of many dives for the day! Scottie ensured both houses were wide awake bright and early so as not to miss any of the day ahead, this also included those who weren`t diving so early - he was extremely popular, especially with Pia who got up to greet us and wish us a happy mornings dive!
Once again we had the Swan to ourselves, being the first and only boat to arrive. The wreck looked different in the light of day, the vis was still sensational and there was once again heaps of marine life to be seen. Bullseye fish seemed to be the most commonly found. This time we were able to penetrate parts of the ship, exploring all the different rooms, coming across a variety of compartments such as the heads, which were still identifiable.
More laughs were had as video pictures of Glenn surfaced, strutting his stuff along the Swan, mask and fins off, with sunnies on, cruising the deck of the ship. We returned to Eagle Bay with plenty of time to spare before the next lot of divers were due to explore the Swan....
