Company description
The custom-designed vessels of the Explorer Ventures Fleet introduce scuba divers from around the world to some of the finest dive sites that the undersea world has to offer. Our 18- to 20-passenger liveaboards offer passengers the many advantages of world-class liveaboard dive vessels, without the large groups carried at much higher prices by many others in the Bahamas, Caribbean and Australia.
As one of the top ten most popular liveaboard diving companies in the world, we know that the search for the perfect liveaboard dive vacation can be exhausting. But when you combine the right vessel, an experienced crew, and varied destinations, you have a winning combination - the right liveaboard trip is the ultimate dive vacation, designed for convenience and without the regimen inherent in land-based operations!
The Explorer Ventures group of companies owns and operates the Caribbean Explorer I in the Bahamas, the Caribbean Explorer II in the Northeastern Caribbean, the Turks & Caicos Explorer II in Providenciales, Turks & Caicos Islands, and the Nimrod Explorer in Cairns, Australia. The companies form the largest independently-owned liveaboard diving company in the world; no partners, franchise agreements or leasing arrangements complicate our pursuit of the best liveaboard diving experience available.
Since 1987, when Explorer Ventures Ltd. first began offering weekly access to the Saba Marine Park with its 16-passenger liveaboard diving vessel Caribbean Explorer, we have been providing one of the world`s best liveaboard diving vacations and liveaboard diving values. Explorer Ventures has consistently rated among the top liveaboard dive operators in the world.
The Caribbean Explorer, which began service in 1987, has received many industry accolades since, from 1988`s Dive Boat of the Year Award (Scuba World Television Series), to the Rodale`s Scuba Diving Reader Survey Award in 1996 for the highest customer satisfaction rating of any dive operation
worldwide, to 1999`s Best Liveaboard Food award. Until her replacement by Caribbean Explorer II in 2003, she had been rated in the top ten liveaboard diving vessels worldwide for 9 years’ running by the readers of Rodale`s Scuba Diving.
The Nimrod Explorer was purchased in October of 1999 and joined her sister ship in providing quality liveaboard diving vacations and uncompromising customer service, at a very reasonable cost. In 2003, Rodale`s readers rated both Nimrod Explorer (#4) and Caribbean Explorer (#7) in the Top Ten Liveaboards worldwide!
In October 2003, the original Caribbean Explorer was entirely refitted and upgraded, rechristened the Turks & Caicos Explorer, and entered service in Providenciales. Since then she`s carried on her long tradition of diving and customer service excellence in introducing hundreds of our repeat passengers to the wonders of the Turks & Caicos Islands.
In December 2004, we finalized the purchase of the new flagship of our fleet, the Turks & Caicos Explorer II, which began service in February of 2005. The original Turks & Caicos Explorer, now renamed (confusingly enough) Caribbean Explorer I, is ecstatic to be her old self again and now operates from Georgetown, Bahamas to San Salvador and Conception Island!
What’s our secret? We own and operate our own vessels, and therefore retain complete control over how they are run and maintained. We have no outside owners, partners or investors to report to, nor do we have any franchisees to satisfy. We can therefore operate with lower overhead, and can apply ourselves to satisfying our customers rather than reporting to outside investors or participants. You have limited vacation time, and you`re entrusting a significant portion of it entirely to us - we take that responsibility very, very seriously!

Our 18-passenger liveaboard dive vessel Nimrod Explorer has been exploring Australia`s Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea since 1984.
The Nimrod Explorer offers trips from 4 to 10 days along the Ribbon Reefs to Lizard Island and even farther north, to the rarely visited northern reaches of the Great Barrier Reef approaching Papua New Guinea. Regularly-scheduled 5-day Coral Sea trips offer the chance to experience even higher-voltage dives; at certain times of the year, manta rays, rare dwarf minke whales and other large pelagics offer a variety of experiences befitting the world`s largest barrier reef system.
With a crew of six and limited to eighteen passengers, the Nimrod Explorer is ideally sized and equipped for shorter trips for travelers passing through Cairns, to longer expeditions to the far reaches of the Great Barrier Reef. A twin-engine power catamaran, the vessel is spacious and very stable, and offers amenities normally seen on much larger boats. Guests are accommodated in 3 large double and 3 spacious quadruple cabins, each of which has ensuite facilities and plenty of storage.
The nicely-appointed main salon offers dining and relaxation areas, as well as a well-equipped entertainment center and bar area. The large shaded top deck offers an open-air respite from the sun, while the expansive bow serves as a welcome warm-up between dives.
Four to five dives are conducted daily directly from the aft dive deck, with entries made directly off of the twin dive platforms into the water. The vessel is well-stocked with quality diving gear for each guest for those passing through the area as part of a longer trip, while the crew`s experience and qualifications are well suited for those traveling specifically to dive. PADI courses from open water certification through advanced and specialty courses are also offered.
For liveaboard diving enthusiasts, the Far Northern Great Barrier Reef represents the ultimate dive vacation. Visiting pristine dive sites inaccessible to any land-based operators, the Nimrod Explorer ventures where even few other liveaboards do, and offers a comfortable and affordable way to join a small group of people experiencing the dive trip of a lifetime.
