Company description

Crystal Divers offers the unique personalized experience of diving in possibly the finest area for diving in Fiji, the Bligh Waters. We cater to the discerning, discriminating diver, experienced divers who appreciate and respect marine life, themselves and others. Dan Grenier accomplished his dream when he came to Fiji to begin a business in recreational diving. He originally started diving in the Beqa Lagoon area in Pacific Harbor in 1991 as a commercial diver for Scuba Hire. He moved to the Qamea Beach Club in 1992, running their dive operation for two years. In 1994, Dan was approached by LomaLoma Resort to setup the very first dive operation in the northern Lau Islands. LomaLoma at that time was owned by Sir Ratu Kamisese Mara, who was the president of Fiji. Dan pioneering the untouched waters of this remote location, and settled on Vanua Balavu, opening his own business, Crystal Divers Fiji. In 1998, Dan decided to move his dive operation to Nananu-I-Ra Island, which is located off the northern tip of Viti Levu. Crystal Divers became more accessible from Fiji`s international airport in Nadi, which is only a two and a half hour drive away. Dan has again developed diving the waters in this area and discovered outstanding dive sites in the Vatu-I-Ra Channel. The Vatu-I-Ra Channel offers spectacular coral reefs and dramatic pinnacles. Our guests can expect to see everything from gardens of giant sea fans and vibrant soft corals to barracuda, turtles, and numerous species of sharks. Our world-class dive sites are also home to myriad colorful reef fishes and invertebrates, as well as occasional pelagic visitors such as mantas, whales, and dolphins. In August of 2001 a twenty-five foot whale shark was spotted by divers at one of our dives sites known as Instant Replay. A rare and spectacular sighting. Crystal Divers is a fully NAUI & PADI certified dive center catering to all levels of divers. Let Dan Grenier and our experienced crew guide you through the Bligh Waters to see spectacular coral reefs and dramatic drop-offs in our custom-built 40` dive boat. You`ll see everything from gardens of giant sea fans and vibrant soft corals to barracuda, turtles, resident schools of tuna, and numerous species of sharks. Our world-class dive sites are also home to myriad colorful reef fishes and invertebrates, as well as occasional pelagic visitors such as mantas, whales, and dolphins.

Location description:

Nananu-I-Ra is an 870-acre island located just five minutes off the northern tip of the big island of Viti Levu. We are 10 minutes from the township of Raki Raki and only a 2-hour drive by paved road from the Nadi International Airport. Nananu-I-Ra has a little of everything that is Fiji: white sandy beaches, black lava rock, coconut trees, rain forest, flowering bougainevilla and plumeria of many colors. And that is just the beginning. Fiji enjoys an ideal South Seas tropical climate. Maximum summer (November to April) temperatures average 30 degrees Celsius (86F) with a water temperature of 80-85F. The winter average (May to October) maximum is 26 degrees Celsius (79F) with a water temperature of 75F. The Fiji sun is much stronger than you might be used to, due to the proximity to the equator. Be sure to bring sun protection! Nananu-I-Ra Island lies off the northernmost tip of the main island of Viti Levu and is within the Ra Province, with the closest township being Rakiraki. Fiji lies between 15 and 22 south of the equator, just west of the International Dateline, making Fiji the place in the world where each new day starts, 12 hours ahead of Greenwich Military Time. The Fiji group is made up of over 300 islands, of which only one third are inhabited. The two main islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, are volcanic in origin, while the rest of the islands vary greatly in size and are largely coral or limestone. The islands of Fiji are home to many different people, predominately Fijian, Indian, with part - European, Chinese and other Pacific Islanders in small numbers. At the last census of 1996, Fiji`s population was approximately 775,077. Cooler, dry weather prevails during fall and winter - May to October, and the warm damp season of spring and summer exist November to April. Rainfall can be abundant, especially over larger islands like our Viti Levu. We get a sprinkle of a sunshower almost every afternoon for @ 5 minutes in summer. The average ambient air temperature during spring/summer is 85-95oF, while fall/winter is 80-90oF. The average water temperature at the surface is 88oF in summer/fall and 85oF during winter/spring. The first Fijians arrived many centuries ago, landing at Viseisei Village in the western area of Viti Levu. They came on druas, the large double-hulled sailing canoes (outriggers) which are still in use in many outer islands, especially Lau. Crystal Divers has a Lauan canoe, Dan had it built, it took over one year to hand tool everything and sew the two sails. We`ve named it Dakori after Dan`s two children, Dakota and Cory.
