Company description Beyond The Reef started operations in January 1993, catering to small groups that want to experience the best diving that Yap has to offer. We operate several boats, to accommodate guests` preferences. Jesse Faimaw, co-owner of Beyond The Reef, was the first professional dive guide in Yap and his business partner, Dave Vecella, has been guiding divers in Yap for over 15 years. Together, these two gentlemen have discovered and named many of the sites visited today. In fact, the majority of dive guides on the island of Yap were trained by Dave at one time or another.
At Beyond The Reef, we take safety seriously, as any dive operator should. Our staff is trained in CPR and First Aid, and our boats are equipped with Oxygen, First Aid Kits, VHF Radios, Life Jackets, and Signal Flares. Our impeccable safety record is reassuring to our guests, and our unusually high ``staff to customer ratio`` makes for a memorable adventure, both above and below the surface.
We have recently replaced our rental department with state of the art Aqua~Lung regulators and BCDs, and Deep Sea shortie wetsuits, because quality is important to us. All of our regulators have an octopus and depth gauge.
Yap`s new Recompression Facility is staffed by Dave and some other key people in the diving industry on the island, as well as the dedicated hospital staff. Dave had previous hyperbaric training in the Bahamas, where he worked as an instructor/guide in the 1980`s. Dave also had extensive Diving Physiology training before graduating from FIT University, and conducts the dive days to reflect maximum safety for his guests.
We don`t praise ourselves with magazine awards and accomplishments. We don`t need to. Our guests do it for us, day after day, and year after year. Haven`t seen us in magazine ads? That`s because those ads are quite costly, and we would rather put that money into the services we offer and upgrading equipment from time to time. And since our boats are full most days, we feel that magazine ads are nonessential. Instead, we rely on ``word of mouth`` advertising; the best kind there is!
Our gift shop has a selection of T-shirts, shorts and caps, and we offer a wide variety of diving equipment and accessories. From masks, snorkels and fins, to defog solution and straps, fish id cards, slates, and wetsuits, divers and snorkelers can usually find what they`re looking for at Beyond The Reef.
We sell Aqualung Scuba equipment, from regulators and bcd`s to tanks and dive computers. Our dive classroom is on the premises, right at the water`s edge; the boats are a mere twenty steps away. We also have a repair center, and are able to repair most brands of diving equipment, so there`s no need to worry while you`re far from home. We`ve added a desktop computer to use free of charge for our guests, to check email after diving, view digital images fresh from the dive or burn photos to a cd. Internet access is purchased through prepaid FSM Telecom phone cards, available in our office.
Beyond The Reef has a fully stocked rental department, including Aqualung regulators and bcd`s, Deep See wetsuits, Suunto dive computers, masks, snorkels, fins, and Sealife Reefmaster 35mm cameras. So if you`re traveling light, we have everything you need for a day on the water. And yes, our dive trips include the use of tanks and weight belts. After the equipment is washed in our fresh water rinse tanks, our guests prefer to leave their equipment in our secure overnight equipment room. The next day we`ll set up your equipment for you on the boat, so the only thing you need to think about in the morning is how you like your coffee!
Location description: Beyond The Reef`s waterfront dive center is conveniently located in the town center of Colonia, a leisurely stroll from most of Yap`s hotels. The dive center is located in the Marina Center, a waterfront facility featuring deep water dockage that`s centrally located to most of Yap`s hotels, restaurants and bars.
Yap is in the heart of Western Micronesia, in the vast Pacific Ocean, 800 miles east of the Philippines, 500 miles south of Guam, and 300 miles north of Palau. History and traditions are rich here, island customs still practiced, and the diving is regarded by many as the best in the world. Diving with our resident manta population is an almost daily occurrence, and the extraordinary diversity of walls and reefs that surround our isle is stunning. Very few people have seen this unique place. A magical, enchanting island that`s waiting for you. From mantas and sharks to macro and mandarinfish, Yap`s got it all!
Yap`s reefs and walls are teeming with a myriad of tropical life and specimens. On the eastern side of the island group, which is also the windward side, the reefs are sloping at an angle, with a plateau at about 30 ft. / 10 m and progressing deeper to several hundreds of feet deep. The walls are on the southern and western sides of Yap, with the top of the reef between 10 and 30 ft./3 and 10m and plunging vertically to several hundred feet. The visibility along the outer reefs usually exceeds 100 ft./30m on a daily basis.
Channel entrances are also a favorite with BTR`s dive guides. Done on an incoming tidal flow, the current entices schooling reef fish and larger predators alike. Some of these locations are great for macro photography too!
Yap has several wreck sites that, although their locations are known, very little is undertood as to the history behind such watery fates. Ships, planes, barges and ammunitions are scattered among the vast reef system, and Beyond The Reef has started a project to document these historical sites.
We will be accompanied by a researcher from Yap`s Historical Preservation Office, who will provide insight and act as an educational guide to the current site being studied.
Visiting divers can join these exploration dives, assisting the research project with data collection and photographs.
In addition to exploring the known wrecks, Beyond The Reef will also be searching for ``yet-to-be`` discovered vessels that have been rumoured to have been lost during air and sea battles during World War II. In the past, we have found large ship anchors dating back to the 1800s and bombs and anti-aircraft munitions from WWII.
Please join us on this historical project to discover all of Yap`s wrecks.
