Vacation Holiday Scuba Diving
Company description
Yap has always been known for its world class diving and Manta Rays. So if we are talking ``Big Animal Encounters - Up Close and Personal`` this is the place. Feeding on the rich plankton from legendary Miil Channel mantas appear daily feasting on this marine buffet and stopping by the cleaning stations for a little sprucing up.
Water Temperature - 81 F / 26 C (Year Round)
Visibility - Manta Dives 30 to 60 feet / 9 to 18 meters
Walls & Reef 150 + feet. / 50 + meters
Depths - Manta Dives 20 to 60 feet / 6 to 18 meters
Planning Your Dives: Your dive operator will schedule your manta dive depending on the tide so it will change from day to day. It may be helpful to consult a tide schedule to help plan your visit so you can do the dives on early morning high tides - one of the best times for a Manta Dive.
Plan several dives along the reef to fully appreciate diving in Yap. Miles upon miles of pristine reef surround us offering a dramatic array or wall dives, drift dives and night dives to enrich your manta experience.
Yap is the most traditional of all the Micronesian Islands. From the moment you step off the plane you will be immersed in two worlds that peacefully coexist in this tropical wonderland. Men wearing traditional thuus and women in lava lava`s standing next to a visitor in his best designer tropical wear.
Visitors are asked to understand and respect this culture. The people of Yap are warm and friendly but little shy. Women are requested to refrain from wearing ``short shorts`` or swim suites in town and to keep their thighs covered.
Keep in mind that all property in Yap is privately owned and you should ask permission to enter a village or enjoy one of the secluded beaches. Your hotel can arrange land tours, snorkeling, kayaking or other activities and should provide a guide to accompany you.
The History of Yap: Anthropological theories suggest that Yap was settled over 3,500 years ago by seagoing voyagers migrating eastward in primitive log like canoes from either Indonesia or the Philippines.
The ancient Yapese empire was a large, powerful and highly organized society. At the empires peak, the central islands of Wa`ab may have had a population of more than 50,000. Huge meeting houses, stone amphitheaters and Men`s Houses dotted the shorelines. Inland majestic family houses sat atop raised stone platforms called ``dayif,`` and their thatched peak roofs jutted out between coconut palms over an intricate winding network of stone paths.
The Yapese empire stretched beyond the islands of Wa`ab proper through the village of Gachpar, Gagil. Partly because of their material abundance relative to the Outer Islands and partly because of the respect they commanded due to their fierce warriors and allegedly powerful magic, the Yapese were able to demand and receive tributes from the Outer Islands. Each year canoes loaded with gifts of lavalavas, coconut rope and other valuables made pilgrimages to Yap to pay homage, seek continued protection and valuable goods such as wood for canoes and the ritual spice tumeric.
Location description:
First opened for diving in 1989 Yap remains an unspoiled island paradise with virgin reefs and bountiful marine life. In addition to the Mantas, Yap a large fringing reef provides a number of spectacular diving spots. In addition to our world class diving Yap has a rich culture that has survived hundreds of years of foreign influence. No visit to Yap would be complete without taking a little terrestrial journey around these ``Mysterious Isles of Stone Money``.
Many travel agents just don`t have enough information on Micronesia to be able to find you the best deal so you may want to seek the help of a Dive Tour Operator who specializes in Micronesia. They get lower airfares based on their volume for group travel and y may be able to save you some money on the total cost of the trip.
For more information go to our Travel Recourses page where provide links to Airlines, Dive Tour Operators, Magazines and Travel Guides that may help you in planning your trip.
Where to Stay: If you want the very best try Traders Ridge Resort. Opened in December of 1999 this is Yap`s only resort hotel and dive center. Styled in a unique 1880`s Victorian architecture it is an intimate resort of 20 rooms and 2 magnificent Grand Suites. All the rooms have French Doors that open on to a veranda or patio with views of the Ocean, Chamarro Bay and the tropical splendor of Yap. They all have air conditioning, ceiling fans, hardwood floors, mini bar, TV/VCR, IDD telephone and a personal room steward to see to your every need.
For the budget minded we recommend the ESA Bay View hotel. They have new clean air conditioned rooms and warm hospitality from Debby Alphanso and her staff.
There is a lot to do in Yap for the non diver. You can take a cultural tour to one of Yap` villages where you can take a look back at a culture that has not been destroyed by western culture. Mountain biking and hiking is offered, but you really should have a guide as all of Yap is private property and permission should be asked from the villages. The Kayaking is great in Yap`s mangroves and windsurfing and sailing are also offered. If you are staying at Traders Ridge you can just relax by Yap`s only swimming pool.
