Company description
Dive Marlborough, a PADI Golden Palm Resort, formerly known as NZ Sea Adventures, have over 20 years of experience operating dive tours and training in and around New Zealand`s Marlborough Sounds. We operate regular diving trips to the outer Marlborough Sounds, consisting of 2 guided dives, lunch, a bush walk or snorkel. All trips are limited to 6 divers per guide, helping to insure your satisfaction and safety.
As well as these daily diving tours, Dive Marlborough also offer PADI Diver training, starting from our very popular 1 day Discover Scuba Diving for the non-diver, and 4 day Learn to Dive courses, plus many other courses right up to and including Instructor level diver training.
Along with the protection offered by surrounding hills and inlets that cut deep inland, Dive Marlborough can guarantee great diving or snorkeling virtually every day of the year. The Marlborough Sounds offer some of New Zealand`s best diving, including one of the world’s best wreck dives, the Mikhail Lermontov.
Some words about training.
Dive Marlborough is the only Dive Centre/ Charter operator in New Zealand to meet the exacting criteria requirements set down by PADI for Golden Palm Instructor Development status. Our professional full time instructional staff includes Course Directors and Master Instructors and can be taught in up to 10 languages. A full range of programmes are offered starting from the very popular 1 day Discover snorkelling tour and 1 day Discover Scuba Diving, for non divers, to our eight day Instructor Development course and 15 week Marine Tourism and Dive Management career courses. The Marlborough Sounds allow a very relaxing environment to develop your diving skills and knowledge. Whether it is your first dive or your thousandth dive there is always something new to see and do under water in the Sounds.

Dive Marlborough offer a unique range of vocational and recreational programmes, which result in a combination of internationally accepted qualifications. Dive Marlborough recognises that knowing how to apply these qualifications in the workplace is just as important than the qualifications themselves. Being based in Picton, one of New Zealand`s Marine Tourism hot spots allows students the opportunity to gain ``real world`` industry experience, by hands on application of new found skills via our Dive and Marine Tourism Resort and associate Marine Tourism operations.
*DAN 02 Instructor
The DAN O2 provider course in a non-PADI course but has PADI endorsement. It has been proven on many occasions that “1st aid†oxygen has benefited victims of both diving and non-diving accidents. Being able to offer Oxygen Provider training has many advantages to both Dive Centres and Resorts, including being included as an optional component on the PADI Rescue course. Dive Marlborough’s O2 Trainer course is run over 2 days and includes O2 provider training which is the pre-requisite to the Trainer programme.
Location description:
Diving in New Zealand`s Marlborough Sounds is an unforgettable experience. With over 3000 km’s of diveable coastline to choose from, finding a good dive site is not hard. Diving in the Marlborough Sounds is diverse. The Inner Sounds offer very calm water a number of shipwrecks, scallop diving and reefs.
The Outer Sounds where most of our dives take place have it all, reefs, wrecks, kelp gardens, schools of temperate water fish, invertebrate life, sea caves and so on.
Dive Marlborough operate 1 day guided dive tours every day of the year and, unlike most other places in New Zealand, the weather will not play a part in whether the tour goes or not. We also run regular over night live-aboard expeditions.
We have exciting tours of the following dive sites.
*MIKHAIL LERMONTOV
The Lermontov ship now lies on her Starboard side and is fully intact. Diving on the Lermontov is a fantastic experience, with the propellers, damage, funnel, bridge and pool area all easily assessable. Penetration dives are not recommended unless with an experienced guide. Dive Marlborough offer external and penetration dives depending on your goals and your experience. The wreck has now become an artificial reef and is encrusted with invertebrate life and home to schools of local fish. Visibility on the outside of the wreck can get down to 5 metres, inside the wreck it averages around 12 metres.
*LASTINGHAM
The Lastingham, which sunk on September 1st 1884, on the western side of Cape Jackson, New Zealand was bound from London to Wellington with a cargo of general goods. 18 lives were lost during her sinking with the survivors spending 3 uncomfortable days before being discovered on this exposed headland without food or water and only in the cloths they were wearing. The Lastingham is now an historical wreck.
*RANGITOTO
The Rangitoto struck a reef off Cape Jackson, New Zealand on July 30th 1873, in much the same area as the Lermontov. She was carrying a large number of passengers from Nelson to Wellington, along with a cargo of mail and Hennesy’s brandy. The wreck lies in only 12 metres of water and is an easy and enjoyable dive. Visibility is normally around 8 to 10 metres. The wreck of the Rangitoto is within 15 minutes of the Lastingham and 30 minutes of the Lermontov.
*WAIHI POINT
Waihi Point offers very good protection when the wind is from the western or northern quarters. There is a reef running offshore from the Point, starting off at 10 metres and progressively getting deeper. The current can be quite strong further out, so most of our dives are done closer to the shore in around 10-12 metres of water. When the current is running, big shoals of Butterfly Perch are seen and just sitting in from the Point looking out makes for a great dive, as you fin back around into the bay large Moki and Crayfish are seen amongst the kelp. Visibility averages around 8-10 metres.
