| Welcome to Quentin`s Spearfishing. This is dedicated to spearfishing and freediving in New Zealand. On my website you can find some of my favorite catches, along with some notable catches of my friends.
Here`s the equipment I am using at the moment. Over the years I have tried a lot of gear, and this is what I have finally come to trust.
*Fins:
Spearfishing: I have two pairs of spearfishing fins - one pair are Omer Milleennium pockets with Powell blades in them. I find that the Powell blades allow mw to dive all day without wearing my legs out, but still provide more than enough grunt to do 100ft dives.
Freediving: For this more technical sport I have a pair of M-Technic stiff blades( pure carbon), that have been glued into a pair of Beuchat foot pockets. The choice of the foot pocket was decided by trying on many different types, and finding the most comfortable.
*Mask & snorkel:
I use a Cressi Sub Super Occhio for spearfishing ,and a Cressi Sub Minima for freediving. I have gone for this brand as it is a better fit on my face than any of the other makes. Both have all the essentials for a freediving mask - ultra low volume, black silicone surround, and an easy to reach nose piece for equalising.
*Spearguns:
I have finally got around to building myself a gun. It is very similar to my original gun - Esclapez handle, 120cm wooden barrel with full length rail, open muzzle design. This is shooting a 160cm long 7mm diameter Rob Allen spear. Propulsion comes from a single 20mm band which gives it some real power. I have two configurations for this gun - one involves a breakaway rig for use on larger pelagic species, and the other is the standard euro style, whereby the shooting line is fixed to the gun. I have also gone ahead and built myself an enclosed track gun for use in the blue water. The bonus of this type of gun is that you can use a faster thinner spear with a lot of rubbers, and not loose the accuracy.
*Wetsuit:
I have finally got rid of the Picasso Hombra suit - thank goodness. I have got an Assassin 5mm suit manufactured by Southern Ocean Wetsuits here on the Kapiti Coast. It is a standard design 2 piece freediving suit, but is lacking the ``Exploding crotch`` design as found in Picasso suits. I can now happily dive in the 10-11 degree C winter water without being near on Hypothermic after 30 minutes. Southern Ocean have since gone out of business, so I guess I will have to go on a search for a new wetsuit manufacturer. I have heard great things about Seaquel Wetsuits, but have yet to try one.
*Boots & Gloves:
There is not a lot of difference between most brands of boot and gloves. I am using Cressi Sub Amara gloves simply because they were on sale at the time. The Amara (like Suede leather) takes a lot of punishment, and provides good protection, while the rest of the glove is 3mm neoprene, and allows for a good fit & freedom of movement. The boots I am using are 5mm Neoprene socks made by Southern Ocean Wetsuits. These have been blind stitched & glued, so you don`t get any seams pressing against your feet.
*Cameras:
I have the luxury of two digital underwater cameras now. The latest addition is an Olympus C8080 with a PT023 housing. 8 Megapixel camera, and a much higher quality lens than the C4040. Fitted with a 2GB CF card, this is good for 160 photos using the digital negative format (RAW). This will be taken To Rarotonga with me this year, and I will let everyone know how it goes. Hopefully get some UW video footage as well.
All equipment abailable for you!

| Location description:
| Almost every weekend, and quite often after work, I will go for a spearfish somewhere around Kapiti Island. This island is a nature reserve, with access to it by permit only. It also has a substantial marine reserve, which is doing a great job of restocking the rest of the island. Kapiti is 7km off shore, and as such is only a quick ride out by boat. Due to the varying terrain, I have certain spots for catching certain species.
You can find more information about my trips and trips available for you on my website.
