Company description Some words about our boat.
Barbarian II was custom designed and built as an affordable live-aboard dive/charter vessel. She caters for six guests in twin share air-conditioned cabins. Her hull is constructed of steel with a wooden super structure and her spacious interior is lined with exotic Papua New Guinean rosewood, giving her a traditional atmosphere from the spacious dive platform to her saloon and air conditioned cabins. The saloon area is cosy, fitted with a TV, video, stereo and an excellent marine life reference library.
The toilet and separate hot shower are easily accessible from the dive deck. At 45 feet long she is small compared to the larger live-aboard vessels which dominate the world diving scene, but all the necessities have been incorporated into a diving vessel for those who prefer simple luxury.
Her wheel house is well equipped with auto pilot, depth sounder, GPS plotter, sonar, radar, HF, VHF and 27 MHz radios. Twenty-four hour 240 volt power is available from three generator sets (23, 11 and 6.5 KVA - all 50 Hz). Her main propulsion unit is an extremely reliable Gardener 6 cylinder giving her a cruising speed of 8 knots. Fuel capacity is 4000 litres. 6000 litres of fresh water are carried along, and with additional fresh water-making facilities, Niugini Diving ensures an ample supply of water for rinsing equipment and camera gear in the tubs provided. Two compressors, an air storage system, 220 bar fill pressure and 90, 70 and 65 cubic foot tanks complete the range of diving equipment aboard. Should you require any other specific equipment, we will of course endeavour to place it on board for you.
Our skipper
Rod Pearce, the owner and skipper of Barbarian II, has been diving Papua New Guinea`s waters for over 30 years and is accredited with discovering PNG`s two premier wrecks - Blackjack and S`Jacob, plus a host of other smaller ships and aircraft lying throughout the region`s waters.
Rod`s interest in the Second World War offensive and its wrecks make him one of the most knowledgeable skippers in PNG. As well as his extensive knowledge, Rod`s love of exploring the underwater world ensures that you will be diving new sites as well as established ones.
Location description: *S` JACOB
Jacob was part of an allied convoy called Lilliput, bringing supplies from Milne Bay to Oro bay when at 1300 hrs she was attacked by 12 Japanese aircraft. Major damage was caused when a bomb dropped on number 3 hatch causing major structural damage and causing the vessel to sink. Of the 158 crew members 153 were picked up by the Corvett H.M.A.S Bendigo and the other 5 members died. One member Private Watson recently received the medal of honor from President Clinton. The Jacob`s massive propeller is still intact and certainly worth a look at along with the many thousands of fish that inhabit the wreck including Manta`s Whalesharks, Giant Groper and Sharks.
*Yokohama Maru
Yokohoma Maru is the largest diveable war time wreck in P.N.G. waters lying at Salamaua, 20 miles from Lae, a popular dive for Lae`s weekend divers. Sitting upright in 70 metres she is in remarkable condition and a superb dive. She rests in a sheltered bay so can be dived year round, average water conditions are 80 - 100 feet. Very little, other than a handful of divers have dived this wreck due to its depth but in recent years it is becoming more popular with teck divers, an excellent wreck and certainly not to be missed by the deep experienced diver.
*Black Jack B17 Bomber
Blackjack, possibly the most famous bomber in the South West Pacific theatre of operations. ( S.W.P.T.) Ditched whilst returning from a raid on Rabaul, she now lies in 50 meters of water off Boga Boga village in the Milne Bay province of Papua New Guinea. Blackjack is obeying B17 Flying Fortress. A little after midnight on July 11, 1943 she took of from Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea to attack a Japanese airstrip at Rabaul on New Britain and did not return.
She was discovered almost by accident by 3 local divers from Lae, she lies in deep water on the seabed a thin skin of coal encrusting her. She is beautifully preserved and totally intact - ammunition belts still wend their way to the machine guns, which still move stiffly in their mounts.
*Masaya
The S.S.Masaya now rests on her starboard side in 165 ft of water. Visibility can be from poor to 60 ft her stern has extensive bomb damage as well as damage from hitting the bottom. Over the past 50 or so years the sea has done major damage to her thin plates but there is still plenty to see. Damage caused by the bombing and impact with the seabed are clearly visible just forward of the stern. The hull is buckled, the stern deck area and associated internal works are smashed. The deck with the houses attached has broken free of the hull, has slid down several feet towards the starboard side, and now rests on the sand. The deck is detached from the stern to a point forward of no 1 hatch where it remains attached to the hull detachment of the deck has opened up the internal spaces of the ship and should make penetration much easier and safer.
...and many others.
