Company description
You will find OceanBlue Adventures and the ``Happy Ha`apai Divers`` located at the Sandy Beach Resort, which has probably the very best accommodation in the Kingdom of Tonga.
The resort is situated on the most beautiful beach in the islands. Small coral reefs within the blue lagoon invite you to swim and snorkel. They are absolutely ideal for first time divers, night diving (plenty to see) and macro photography.
We pride ourselves in offering a professional and personalised service. Whether you are highly experienced or an absolute beginner, we will do our very best to cater to your particular needs.
Being enthusiastic underwater photographers ourselves, we understand the needs of photographers and videographers. You won`t be rushed through your dive in 40 minutes and, while on some dives it is important to follow the guide for safety reasons, as much as possible we will give you and your buddy/model all the freedom you need for that special shot.
Beginners and inexperienced divers are in the very best hands! We offer a full range of PADI and NAUI courses and our policy of having a maximum of only 4 students on any course means we can give individual attention to the underwater comfort and confidence level of each diver. Our aim is to make your introduction to diving as stress-free and enjoyable as possible.
To make sure we can cater to a wide range of divers we have 2 dive boats. Yukon (our main boat) is 9 metres long and is powered by twin 150hp outboards. She was designed and built in New Zealand to carry 8 divers in comfort. She has walk around decks, easy access in and out of the water, galley and toilet and shelter from the sun. Some of the more advanced dives are 12 nautical miles from the resort. Yukon can get experienced divers to these sites in speed and comfort. Sitina is 7 metres long and powered by an 85hp outboard. She is perfect for taking small numbers of divers to some of the closer dive sites. Both boats are also used for our whale encounter trips.
Diving in Ha`apai stands for pure, clear water. Normal visibility is between 30 and 40 metres but can sometimes be more. Temperatures range from 23-24 degrees in the winter to 28 degrees in the summer. Many of the dive sites are within the shelter of the islands and barrier reef but there are also a number of dives that are in more open water providing opportunities for pelagic animal encounters including sharks, tuna, trevally and barracuda etc. Turtles are encountered on many dives as well as eagle rays, sea snakes and myriad tropical reef fish.
A highlight of the diving in Ha`apai is the geography of the reefs themselves. There are caves, canyons, caverns and tunnels to explore on just about every dive with probably many more yet to be discovered. There are also vertical walls, fast flowing passes and colourful coral gardens. Hard corals dominate the reefs but there are also gorgonian fans and soft corals to be found.
From July to October humpback whales visit the Ha`apai group. They are here to give birth, mate and rest in the warm, tropical waters. We often encounter them from the boat, on our way to the dive sites and the very lucky will possibly observe them during a dive. We have the only whale watch licence in the Ha`apai which allows us to swim with these majestic beings.
Equipment:
We recommend a 5mm wetsuit in the winter as the water temperature is 23-24 degrees. During the summer months the water temperature can reach 28 degrees and a 3mm wetsuit is sufficient.
We carry a full range of rental equipment for those who aren`t travelling with their own gear.
Underwater Photo equipment to rent:
Sony 7.2 mega pixel compact camera with Sony 40m housing
Sony mini DV video with Ikelite housing
Safety Equipment:
We carry a full range of safety equipment on our boats including oxygen and general first aid. Both boats have VHF radios, GPS, EPIRB, flares, life jackets and auxiliary engines.
Location description:
Tonga is a pleasant Kingdom in the South seas, situated directly on the date line. Here, the new day begins. Only a few of the total of 175 islands are inhabited. Most of the 115,000 inhabitants live on the main island of Tongatapu.
Tonga consists of three main groups of islands:
In the South Tonga Tapu with it`s capital Nuku`alofa, in the centre the Ha`apai group with wonderful sandy beaches, and in the North the Vava`u group, which is much enjoyed by sailors for its protected bays.
King Taufa`ahau IV is the supreme governmental authority. He is also well known in Western countries as a result of his various journeys.
In Tonga, which strictly follows Christian traditions, public life ceases on Sundays. All the churches are crowded and visitors are always welcome. It is illegal to work on Sundays so we can`t take you diving or whale watching but you are free to snorkel or kayak to the near by island of Nuku-namu
In Tonga, tourism is still in its infancy. The main sources of income are agriculture and fishery in addition to emigrants from Tonga who supply their relatives with money and goods.
Although traffic is ever increasing in the small capital Nuku`alofa and business pulsates within modest limits, time passes more slowly in Ha`apai. Life is calm and contemplative. In Ha`apai, daily services (except Sundays) are provided by small aeroplanes of the Tongan airlines.
The Sandy Beach Resort
This small bungalow resort is situated on Foa Island in the Ha`apai group of islands. Here, you will find the most wonderful white sandy beaches in Tonga.
This is the ideal place for tourists who seek a calm paradise with sophistication and want to enjoy unspoilt nature. The German owners Sigrid and JÑŒrgen Stavenow have been in Tonga since 1987. For a long time, they were the owners of the leading restaurant in Nuku`alofa, until they decided in 1995 to make their dream of their own hotel premises come true. JÑŒrgen offers trips in canoes or on horseback, and is doing bushwalks with the guests. On Sundays, guests are welcome to join him on his way to church. In the evening, Sigrid and JÑŒrgen sit in a friendly group with their guests and tell about their adventures and events.
From time to time a floor show with traditional dances is organised. Wonderful sunsets with a view on the Kao volcano, soft classical music and an excellent dinner bring the day to a peaceful end.12 bungalows called ``Fale`` are situated directly on the white sandy beach. Even at low tide, bathing is possible. The small coral reefs in the lagoon invite one to snorkel and are ideal for beginners.
All rooms are comfortably and stylishly furnished. The offer includes double-bed rooms or rooms with two separate beds. The bungalows are designed so that air conditioning systems are superfluous.
