Malpelo Island -World`s Hammerhead Capital
To make it short, there are no words to describe Malpelo... It has to be visited and dived to grasp the essence of this superb dive location. Today, most justly, Malpelo is being described by an increasing number of dive pros as the ``Ultimate Dive Site``.
But beware... Malpelo is no divers` kindergarten. Novice divers, or divers whose background limits to gin-clear Caribbean waters, should seek additional experience and/or training before attempting the Malpelo`s adrenaline-rush experience. Abundant and large pelagics, soaring swells, deep drop-offs and strong currents acquaint for both the appeal and the challenge that make Malpelo so unique.
Barely more than a dust spot in the middle of the Pacific Ocean charts (3Ñ” 59` North and 81Ñ” 36` West), Malpelo is just the tip of a steep 3+ mile-high mountain ridge (it`s still to be determined whether it is part of the Cocos` system, the Carnegie-Galapagos-Nazca system or a completely different ridge by its own). Right on the Tropical Inter-Confluence Zone (TICZ), Malpelo benefits from the confluence of the North and South Trade Winds with the large fish schools drifting in the Humboldt Current and the nutrient-rich cold waters rising from the abyss. The inevitable result is an extraordinary concentration of marine life forms unparalleled elsewhere in the world.
Vertical cliffs plunging into deep waters host thousands of moray-eels, groupers, snappers and lobsters, while swarms of schooling hammerhead, galapagos and bull sharks, runners, jacks, amberjacks and pompanos patrol the ever-colorful coral reefs. As if such an exhibition werenÒ‘t more than enough for any diver, the isle is visited with regular frequency by large pelagics, like mantas and whale sharks, and herds of marine mammals, like porpoises and pilot whales. A special deep dive site (200+ feet) offers qualified tekkies and scientists only a real treat of a family of resident ``monster sharks`` (14-20 foot-long ragged-tooth sand tigers). To-date, it is still to be determined whether this is the same kind of ragged-tooth to be found off the Lebanum coast or a completely new species.
