Did you know that the 23rd May is World Turtle Day? and June the 8th World Oceans Day?....

This year, the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) is celebrating 25 years of caring for our seas, shores and wildlife. You can help support the charity and raise funds for our vital work by holding a BIG BLUE DAY at work, club or school. It's really simple to join in - whether you dress up or dress down (in blue for a day!), for a £1 donation to MCS, your event can take place at any time – but what better opportunity is there than on any day between World Turtle Day (Friday, 23rd May) and World Ocean’s Day (Sunday,8th June)?

If you'd like to help us celebrate and protect our BLUE planet, please ask for your free BIG BLUE DAY pack today from fundraising@mcsuk.org . Each pack contains BIG BLUE DAY posters, stickers, MCS leaflets and information about how every £1 makes a difference to our seas, shores and wildlife.

campaign:
Marine Reserves Campaign - please have your say

Lamlash Bay (c) COASTThe Scottish Executive has proposed that Lamlash Bay, Arran will soon become a Marine Reserve, with a No Take Zone and a Fisheries Management Area. This is fantastic news, resulting from years of hard work by the Community of Arran Seabed Trust (COAST) with MCS's help - BUT it is not yet a done deal! Your input is needed to approve the plan.
Please complete and send, before the 5th June, the consultation document at www.scotland.gov.uk/consultations.

You will be asked the following three questions, and MCS suggests you use the replies suggested below (but feel free to comment as you wish).

Question 1: Do you agree or disagree with the proposal to establish a Marine Reserve in Lamlash Bay? Agree.

Question 2: Do you think there would be any a) positive and b) negative implications should the reserve be established in Lamlash Bay? Only positive impacts - for nature conservation, sustainable diving tourism, and overspill of scallop populations for fishing outside the reserve boundary.

Question 3: Are there any other points which you would like to make in relation to the proposed Lamlash Bay Marine Reserve? I look forward to a network of nationally important marine protected areas in Scottish waters

Calum Duncan, MCS Scottish Conservation Manager says: "Through Seasearch training and advocacy support in Scotland, as well as collaborations at UK and overseas conferences, MCS has been working closely with COAST over the years - and will respond to the consultation with strong support for their proposal. However, contrary to some opinion, it is not yet a done deal and the more positive responses to the consultation, the better. Please therefore take the time to respond favourably and help support this excellent grassroots campaign for marine protection in Lamlash Bay, Arran. COAST need this last push to demonstrate to the Scottish Environment Secretary the widespread support for their proposals."

You do not have to be a resident of Scotland to comment. Thank you.

wildife reports:
basking shark (c) Colin SpeedieMCS is just beginning to receive reports of basking sharks off the South West UK coast - if you come across one or more of these gentle giants, please do let us know for Basking Shark Watch. You can fill in details of shark, turtle and jellyfish sightings online at http://www.mcsuk.org/marineworld/sightings_report/.

If you live in Cornwall or the Scilly Isles, and you could spare just a couple of hours each week, you may like to take part in organised watches for the sharks - please contact Rachel Williams for more information: rachel@cornwt.demon.co.uk.
