British diving survivors OK, leave clinic

James Manning, 30, and Charlotte Allin, 25, have checked out from the hotel they were staying at in Labuhan Bajo, a town on the western tip of Flores island. "They came back from the clinic this afternoon and immediately checked out. A friend of theirs took them to another island, but I do not know which one," the receptionist said.

The Britons were part of a group of five divers found stranded Saturday on a small island in a national park reserve where the Komodo dragon lives, after being swept away by strong currents during a dive off Labuhan Bajo on Thursday.

Doctors had asked them to recuperate at the clinic for two days, said local policeman, Viktor Jemadu.

"They were suffering from dehydration and besides that, two days of rest would also help heal the lacerations they suffered, from corals and stones and from the tight bind they were linked with to stay together," Jemadu said.

Another one of the survivors, a Swedish woman, was still registered at the hotel in Labuhan Bajo and had returned from the clinic, but she could not be immediately reached by telephone.

A British woman, who led the dive, and a French man, who was in the group, were staying at an island some 30 minutes away by boat from Labuhan Bajo, the receptionist said. There are no telephone links to the island.

The French survivor, Laurent Pinel, said the group had to fight off one dragon with rocks and scavenged for shellfish as they waited to be rescued from the island in the Komodo National Park, east of Bali.

Most of the stranded divers stuck close to the pebbled beach until they were spotted by national park rangers some 40 hours after they disappeared.
