18-year-old dies in Kaashidhoo while diving
An 18-year-old boy from Kaafu atoll Kaashidhoo who was on a fishing
excursion near the island reef died suddenly, the Maldives Police
Service has said.
According to the Police website, Ahmed Risham
of Maakoni in Kaashidhoo, had been diving near the reef, hunting for
fish, when he had become unwell and had been taken to the Island Health
Centre but had died shortly thereafter. Police quoted doctors who had
attended to Risham as saying that he had probably died due to
asphyxiation while diving.
Police said that Risham had been wearing a
mask and had gone underwater hunting for fish but had surfaced shortly
complaining of a headache. However he had been in good spirits then and
had been very active, Police quoted the crew of the boat he was on as
saying.
“Not long after, he suddenly became ill and
we immediately took him to Kaashidhoo,” the Police website said,
quoting the crew of the boat. “He was transferred to the Health Centre
in an ambulance.”
Police said that there were nine people
onboard the dhoni at the time of the incident and that Risham’s older
brother had also been among them. Police also said that there were no
signs of injuries on Risham’s body.
