protection measures for lyme bay

MCS welcomes the robust protection measures announced by Defra yesterday to protect the wildlife-rich reefs of Lyme Bay. Considerable effort has been made over a long period by MCS, Natural England, Seasearch divers, marine scientists and, particularly, Devon Wildlife Trust to demonstrate that damage was being done to the area - one of the UK’s richest marine wildlife sites. The Government has finally taken heed of advice to close off about 10% of the bay to trawl and scallop fisheries.

Lyme Bay Scallop, (C) Steve TrewhellaLyme Bay, off the South Devon and Dorset coast, is one of our great marine treasures. It is home to seafans, sponges, sunset corals and maerl beds. Until yesterday, fishing for scallops in Lyme Bay using heavy towed gear had been allowed throughout the area.

Dr Jean-Luc Solandt, MCS says "In the end, most fishermen and conservationists want the same thing - sustainable fishing which has limited impact on the marine environment. The only way to achieve this is to manage areas of sea appropriate to the vulnerability of the habitat, and to leave some areas completely alone to entirely recover from man's impact."

powerboat danger

round britain powerboat race re-routed to avoid hazardous collisions with baskingBasjing Shark (c) J Stafford-Deitsch sharks
MCS voiced our concerns about the safety of marine wildlife to the organisers of the 2008 Round Britain Powerboat Race. The race leaves from Portsmouth on Saturday 21st June, with some last-minute re-routing organised following MCS warnings about the potential for lethal race boat collisions with basking sharks along the race route. However, we remain concerned that other marine wildlife including seabirds, seals, whales and dolphins may be hit along the route by the high-speed boats, or disturbed by their noise.

We need YOUR help. Join our Facebook group, 'Support The Marine Conservation Society', to find out more about this race and what you can do to protect basking sharks and other at-risk marine life from hit by power boats during next week's race.
