27 May 2009:
Divers accidentally discovered the wreck of ship sent to help Bonnie Prince Charlie.
Over 15 years ago Kevin McCormac, who is a professional diver uncovered a tiny copper disc on the seabed off Porth Dafarch.
Kevin left it to languish in the drawer thinking that it is completely unremarkable and valueless item.
Years later mr McCormac's father decided to send the disc to National Museum of Scotland for examination that showed it as an identical duplicate of the seal on the signet ring worn by Mary Queen of Scots at her execution. That priceless ring is kept at The British Museum.
The historical research, suggests ring may have be carried on one of several privateer vessels that were sent by Louis XV of France, to supply or rescue Charles Edward Stewart "Bonnie Prince Charlie", in the aftermath of his defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1745.
The vessel is thought to have been carrying gold and supplies. Work is now under way to fully explore the seabed in a unique project that will see access gained via a flight of scaffolding erected down the rugged cliff face.
