The deepest part of the Mariana Trench known as Challenger Deep has been explored by unmanned aquatic vessel named Nereus.
Is was the first exploration of the Mariana Trench since a Japanese-built robot "Kaiko" attempted to do the same back in 1998. Unfortunately the robot disappeared due to a cable connection failure during a typhoon in 2003.

Nereus had more luck because of it's new design and micro-thin fibre optic cable. The robot was able to take pictures and video of the ocean seabed and collect samples of sea life 10,902 meters deep.
