Treasure hunters refuse to return 17 tons of gold and silver to Spain
Odyssey Marine Exploration Inc. is going to object the U.S. Federal Court Magistrate's recommendation to return over 500,000 gold and silver coins back to Spain.
Back in 2007 Odyssey submitted the "Black Swan" case to federal court after discovering treasures in the Atlantic Ocean. The government of Spain filed a claim asserting that the treasures belong to them as the ship came from Nuestra Senora de las Mercedes and exploded in 1804.
Odyssey's Vice President and General Counsel Melinda MacConnel said they are going to object the Magistrate's recommendation as there are a lot of facts that have been disputed, for exapmle it is still unclear whether vessel was on a commercial mission and wether the treasures originally belonged to Spain.
MacConel hopes that descendants of merchants and rich people who owned a portion of the cargo will join Odyssey in objecting. He is sure that their claim will finally be reviewed.
