Japanese submarine M-24 is under protection as historic shipwreck


The Japanese midget submarine M-24, one of three midget submarines that attacked Sydney Harbour back in 1942 has been declared an historic shipwreck. 67 years ago, after firing two torpedoes, the submarine disappeared near the harbour entrance.

In was found by a team of divers in November 2006 and was provisionally protected by Australian Government. After positive identification the site has been given additional protection by a 500 metre radius no-go zone and 24/7 camera monitoring. It is now open for archaeological surveys only.
