June 27-July 3 has been proclaimed as Dive Flag Awareness Week in Florida, USA
June 27-July 3 has been proclaimed as Dive Flag Awareness Week in Florida by the Gov. Charlie Crist. It is done by authorities to emphasize the importance of engaging all safety precautions: to remind divers that they have to present their flags according the the laws and to remind boaters to look for the flags on the surface.
According to the rules, a divers-down flag must be red with a white diagonal stripe. It has to be at least 20 inches by 24 inches, and flown at a high point, observable 360 degrees around a ship. A divers-down flag towed on a float must be at least 12 inches by 12 inches. Both flags must have stiffeners to hold them open. All vessels must make a reasonable effort to stay at least 300 feet away from the flags in open water or 100 feet away within a river, inlet or channel. Within those distances, a ship or boat may operate but must be at slow speed. For more information visit myfwc.com.
