Spear fishermen face probe in Florida

A special group that manages offshore fishing has received a complaint from some South Carolina fishermen asking to look into whether commercial spear fishermen from Florida are exploiting the regulations when they spear a huge amount of game fish on the Carolina's artificial reefs.

Every year at least two boats come northward and spear flounder, big grouper and while diving at the state's 52 reefs.

Sgt. Steve Pop said that the reefs are supposed to be for weekend fishermen but according to one spear fisherman, DNR doesn't have rules stating who is going to fish or spear the artificial reefs.

Wildlife official want to discuss this issue with South Atlantic Marine Fisheries Council who makes the rules for fishing in that region.
